Department of Health urges people to get tested

NUNAVUT
Sexually active Nunavummiut are strongly encouraged to get tested for syphilis because there is an increase in the sexually transmitted infection in the territory, state Department of Health officials.

Symptoms listed include a painless skin bump or sore around the genitals or mouth, or a body rash.

"Some people don't have any symptoms or don't notice them but can still pass syphilis and other sexually transmitted infections to their partner," stated communication strategist Ron Wassink.

"Syphilis can be dangerous if left untreated, and is easily passed during vaginal, anal or oral sex."

The department urges testing be done because "without treatment, syphilis can harm every part of the body and cause blindness, paralysis, brain damage, heart damage and even result in death.

Pregnant women are particularly at risk, since the infection can seriously harm both the mother and the baby."

As for prevention, practising safe sex, such as using condoms and dental dams are encouraged. All health centres can provide information on testing and treatment, as well as free condoms and lubricant.
