Iqaluit RCMP responded to a shots-fired incident at approximately 4:20 p.m. near the Iqaluit breakwater.

The RCMP on the scene then requested the public stay away from Ward Inlet and Tarr Inlet.

Later, the road to Apex was blocked by municipal enforcement officers as RCMP pursued the suspect. Vehicles gathered at the Aqsarniit Middle School parking lot as residents were temporarily unable to return home during the lockdown.

At approximately 7:30 p.m., a suspect was arrested without incident. A male youth has been charged with assault, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, careless use of a firearm, pointing a firearm and obstruction.

He was released from custody with conditions and is scheduled to appear in youth court in Iqaluit July 8.

"We continue to thank the public for their co-operation during these high-risk situations," stated Const. Lurene Dillon in a news release:

Sexual assault at breakwater

Iqaluit

A 25-year-old woman was walking her dog by the breakwater in Iqaluit at night on May 25 when she was assaulted, police said.

The victim managed to fight the assailant off and contact police.

The RCMP arrived on scene at 9:30 p.m. and began an investigation.

"Shortly thereafter, a 23-year-old male was arrested and taken into custody," stated Const. Lurene Dillon in a news release.

The man was charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of breach of undertaking.

He was remanded into custody and scheduled to appear in court June 14 in Iqaluit.

"This is an opportunity for the police to remind Nunavummiut to be mindful and cautious of this very harmful and disrespectful act," stated Dillon. "Should you or someone you know (be) victim of a crime, please report it to the police and there is help available."
