NWT wildfire season remains quiet

The forest fire season in the NWT remains relatively quiet but officials from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (ENR) are warning of hotter, drier weather in the forecast. According to Amber Simpson, ENR spokesperson, new fires are possible as a warm, dry weather pattern takes over with the possibility of dry lightning over the next week. She added that there has only been one new fire in the territory over the past week. It was in the Inuvik region and is declared extinguished.

Impaired driving charges after person hit

A 47-year-old man was charged Thursday with two counts of impaired driving and one count of dangerous driving after a man was struck by a vehicle downtown two weeks ago, according to an RCMP news release.

It's alleged Jason Madsen was the driver who struck a man June 9 near the intersection of 50 Street and 51 Avenue. The driver was taken to hospital but police have not provided an update on his condition. Madsen is scheduled to next appear in court Sept. 13.

Assisted death bill passes

A federal piece of legislation amending the Criminal Code of Canada to remove provisions banning doctor assisted death has passed both houses of Parliament.

While the Senate previously removed a provision limiting the practice to those near the end of their life, the House of Commons sent back a version with the provision restored. That version passed in the House 190-108, and then in the Senate 44-28. It received royal assent Friday.

The Supreme Court of Canada in 2015 struck down the ban on doctor assisted death and gave Parliament time to pass new legislation governing the practice.

Greenhouse a go

Naujaat

Undergraduate business students Ben Canning and Stefany Nieto have taken the greenhouse project to the next level in Naujaat.

The two attend the Ted Rogers School of Management at Ryerson University in Toronto, Ont., and are part of the student entrepreneur campus group, Ryerson Enactus, of which Nieto is president.

Canning will remain working on the project in Naujaat until July 22, while Nieto will return to the community from Toronto for one week on June 25.

The rest of the Enactus team will be in Naujaat from July 1 to 18, during which time they will team with local residents and attempt to harvest the produce planted at the end of this May, as well as work with a local women's collective to sell the fresh food to local residents at an affordable price.

They will also try to assist the women's collective in using produce to make nutritious, prepared meals to sell to both their community and neighbouring communities, as well as launch a coop program with local high school students, so that the students will learn horticulture and business skills, as well as earn a course credit in science.

They also hope to build another community greenhouse in Arviat this coming August, depending on available funding.

For more on the greenhouse project, please see the June 29 edition of Kivalliq News.
