Construction of the new $40-million Iqaluit aquatic centre is on budget but is waiting for approval from the Qulliq Energy Corporation to connect to the district energy grid.
Project manager Pierre Meredith told Iqaluit council June 14, that the facility will "definitely" come in on budget and work is progressing on schedule. Structural work was completed last December and installation of metal siding and the roof membrane is in progress and to be completed by the end of June.
However, the aquatic centre needs to connect to the district energy system to achieve LEED silver certification and to achieve energy performance objectives, Meredith said.
However, Qulliq has not yet approved the connection to the district energy system.
Asked what the issue with Qulliq was, Meredith said he has been told multiple times that the subject has been presented at Qulliq board of director meetings for approval but as far as Meredith knows it gets deferred every meeting.
Meredith has been working with the city to arrange a meeting with the minister responsible for Qulliq.
