Ferry hours challenged

Fort Simpson's Chamber of Commerce has renewed its petition to extend the hours of the MV Lafferty ferry from 6 a.m. to midnight without an afternoon break.

Currently, the ferry opens at 8 a.m.

The petition can be found at the Nahanni Inn, Unity, Pandaville, Janor and The Willows Inn, the Visitor Information Centre, Liidlii Kue First Nation, P.R. Contracting and Dehcho Suites.

On June 1, Nahendeh MLA Shane Thompson said in the legislative assembly he had heard from the Department of Transportation that such an extension would not be possible due to fiscal restraints.

However, Transportation Minister Wally Schumann also said the department had yet to do a full cost analysis.

Canoe trip kicks off

The Dehcho K'ehodi youth river trip was scheduled to kick off June 16 from Fort Simpson to Willow Lake River.

An initiative put forth by Dehcho First Nations, Liidlii Kue First Nation and the University of Alberta, the event intended to send 10 students on the canoe trip, which would wrap up June 21.

Students will participate in recording environmental changes.

The trip was initially intended for youth from Thomas Simpson School in Fort Simpson but was opened up to Fort Providence youth at Deh Gah School as well.

Fort Simpson gets active

The Village of Fort Simpson's recreation department will be holding events until the end of the month to celebrate recreation and parks month.

A schedule from the department shows Ultimate Frisbee scheduled for June 15 and 29 at 7 p.m.

The village will also be holding a midnight baseball game on June 20 and an Aboriginal Day fun run on June 21. The fun run will start at 5 p.m. Later in the week, there will be a community soccer game held June 24 with a water fight and barbecue scheduled for the following day.

Aboriginal Day celebrated

Nahanni Butte will be welcoming the Magoo Crew back to the community on June 21 to celebrate Aboriginal Day.

The dancing, beatboxing and rapping team is expected to stay in the community from June 20 to 22.

The day's celebrations will include games and barbecues.

Soccer-baseball kicking off

Inuvik's slo pitch league organizers are looking to recruit, but they're starting young.

Starting this week, a soccer-baseball club for youth will be running on Monday nights. Soccer-baseball combines the running around bases aspect of baseball with soccer in that instead of hitting a ball with a bat, participants kick a soccer ball to score runs.

Organizer Scott Macbeth said it's a good way to get children introduced to the sport without needing a lot of gear, like appropriately-sized bats and gloves.

The first session was held June 13, with players aged six to 10 asked to come from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and their counterparts aged 11 through 15 invited for the next hour. The drop-in program will continue to run every Monday for the summer. Participants' parents or guardians must sign a waiver, available at the school or at the ball diamond on Monday nights.

Arctic Market to open

The year's first Arctic Market will take place in Jim Koe Park this Saturday June 18, beginning at 10 a.m. and wrapping up at 2 p.m.

The market will be open every Saturday from now until early September, and will feature selections of fresh vegetables, baked goods, beaded art and carvings, along with flowers among other things. Vendors are encouraged to contact the town office to reserve a table.

Sign up opens for arts festival

The 28th edition of the Great Northern Arts Festival is quickly approaching, with registration now open for workshops.

The festival, which will take place July 15 to 24, will feature workshops in beading, stone carving, ookpik-making, hat and mitten fabrication, stencils and even a class on making a salmon-leather inlay for an iPhone case, among a great many others. Organizers caution that space in each workshop is limited, so interested parties would do well to register early.

Run under midnight sun

Inuvik's runners have until June 16 to sign up for the Midnight Sun Fun Run at the town of Inuvik's recreation department.

There are 5-km, 10-km, and half-marathon routes planned for all levels of competitors June 18, with the half-marathon event kicking off at 10 p.m. at the Midnight Sun Complex. The 10-km race will begin at 10:30, with the 5-km following at 11 p.m.

All ages are welcome to participate, as are pets.
