Northwestel struggles to update 9-1-1 message

When a person dials 9-1-1 in the territory, an automatic message will alert the caller that the number does not work in this jurisdiction, but this message won't provide an alternate number.

Kevin Brezinski, director of public safety with the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA), told Yellowknifer this could soon change - once Northwestel figures out exactly how to do it.

"It's just going to take a little while for Northwestel to figure out how best to renew the message because the technology has changed since they put the last one on," said Brezinski.

"So we're experiencing a little bit of a delay now, but they're working hard at it and we expect that to be done hopefully quickly."

Once implemented, Brezinski says the message will direct callers to the four-digit numbers of the RCMP, fire and ambulance in both English and French.
