NUNAVUT
The deadline is approaching to participate in the public hearing on the draft Nunavut land use plan, now scheduled for March or April 2017 in Iqaluit, the Nunavut Planning Commission announced June 1.

Inuit and residents of Nunavut, among others, may request participant status. Regional Inuit organizations, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc., municipalities, territorial and federal government agencies, hunters and trappers organizations, and other designated groups also qualify for such status.

The draft Nunavut land use plan builds on other land use plans, including the North Baffin Regional Land Use Plan and the Keewatin Regional Land Use Plan, and will set the rules for projects on the land in Nunavut.

A spokesperson for Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada stated June 10 that no decision has been made regarding federal funding for the Nunavut land use plan public hearing and that discussions with the planning commission on the matter are ongoing.

Originally, the federal government set a deadline of 2014 for the draft plan to be completed, but the Harper government refused to provide the estimated $1.2 million needed to run the hearing.

Participants have until noon on July 4 to indicate their desire to be heard.
