A new program encouraging students to read is taking place at the Norman Wells Community Library, said librarian Jodi Holland.

Titled the Book Riot, the program asks students to spend 20 minutes three days a week reading from May 24 to June 17.

Holland keeps track of their progress and if they fulfill the required reading, they earn a pizza and Caesar salad meal courtesy of the library board.

Holland said she modelled the program after the Pizza Hut BOOK IT program her own children enjoyed.

"This is the first time that we've done this," she said. "I think it's going to go over well and I think it's going to be something that we'll bring in at the beginning of the next school year."

The Book Riot is available to participants up to 16 years old and parents and guardians are encouraged to come along and read to younger children.
