News/North recognized with 13 journalism awards
Paper comes out on top in Best Overall Paper category in two contests, on top of 11 other honours

News/North is proud to announce it is the recipient of a number of awards from two newspaper organizations this spring, including best newspaper - two times over.
The March 9 edition of News/North was judged first among the peers in its circulation class for Best Overall Paper by the Canadian Community Newspaper Association. The paper was recognized in this and 12 other categories this spring. - NNSL file photo |
Both the national Canadian Community Newspapers Association and regional Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association recognized News/North as the Best Overall Paper for its circulation class.
These awards are included in a total of 13 accolades received from both organizations for 2015, which were announced in late April.
Including the best all-around newspaper distinction, the Canadian Community Newspaper Association recognized News/North with four national awards. Assignment editor Randi Beers placed first in Best National Editorial for a piece marking the end of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission ("Truth, reconciliation and education," June 15) and third place in the Best Local Editorial category for an article questioning the lenient sentence of notorious residential school sex offender Paul Leroux ("A 'crushing' 10-month sentence").
News/North reporter Elaine Anselmi was recognized with a second-place finish for Best Environmental Writing for a story investigating the relationship between the W.C. Bennett Dam in B.C. and water levels in the Northwest Territories ("Southern reservoir full but Mackenzie runs dry," Oct. 12).
Regionally, News/North picked up nine awards from the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association's Better Newspapers Competition.
The paper won a first-place distinction for its 2015 Opportunities North pull-out in the Best Special Section category; ad designer Bonnie Logsdon was recognized with a first-place showing in Best Advertisement for an ad showcasing services at Hay River's Ptarmigan Inn, published May 18; Beers came in third place in the Editorial Writing Excellence category for "A 'crushing' 10-month sentence"; and reporter Kassina Ryder was recognized with a second-place showing in the Best Educational Coverage K-12 category for her March 25, 2015 story "3D-printed wind turbine in works."
Additionally, Anselmi was awarded first place in Best Habitat Conservation Writing for "Southern reservoir full but Mackenzie runs dry."
Former reporter Karen K. Ho was recognized with a second-place finish in the Best Hard News Photo for her pictures from federal election night last October.
News/North also picked up the Best Overall Paper award, Best Editorial Page (second place) and Best Front Page (third place) in its circulation class.
