Madeline Lake fire declared out
After burning for more than a week, the Madeline Lake fire, 25 km northeast of Yellowknife off the Ingraham Trail, was officially declared out yesterday by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The fire, which burned about 0.08 square kilometres, began on May 14. It threatened a number of cabins and homes but never reached them. It is the only fire recorded by the department this year, according to spokesperson Judy McLinton.

Deputy ministers shuffled
Premier Bob McLeod has announced a shuffle of deputy ministers. Mike Aumond becomes the secretary to cabinet and deputy minister of the executive.
David Stewart will take over as secretary to the financial management board and deputy minister of finance. Sylvia Haener becomes Deputy Minister of Education, Culture and Employment. Martin Goldney takes over as deputy minister of justice. Williard Hagen joins the public service as deputy minister of lands. Tom Jensen also joins the public service to become deputy minister of industry, tourism and investment and Shaleen Woodward becomes acting Deputy Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Intergovernmental Relations.

Bushman concert Thursday
The Bushman, an indigenous Electro-Rock group, will be having a concert at Northern Arts and Cultural Centre this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets proceeds will go towards the centre's mentorship program, which puts local artists on professional stages and is an annual program. The Bushman is just one of three acts performing at NACC this week with Mary Caroline and Leanne Goose set to play on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

Defence minister in Yk
Canada's Minister of Defence Harjit Sajjan was in Yellowknife yesterday attending meetings at Joint Task Force North headquarters. Sajjan held a defence policy review stakeholder roundtable meeting, according to Jordan Owens, press secretary to the minister. Sajjan was also meeting with the media to discuss the maintenance of Canada's Arctic sovereignty and the role the North plays in defence of Canada.

Counsellors arrive in wake of stabbing
Coral Harbour
A group of counsellors were sent to help the community of Coral Harbour after the tragic stabbing of a woman and three children in that community earlier this month. One of the children died as a result of her wounds.
The woman and the other two children were medevaced to Winnipeg where they're still being treated for their injuries.
As of press time all three were listed as stable, with two still being in critical condition.
Sent into Coral to help were two community health workers, two critical incident counsellors from Iqaluit and two Inuktitutspeaking counsellors from Rankin Inlet.
The RCMP have still not announced any charges in the incident, nor released the names of the victims.
Polar bear killed for safety
Rankin Inlet
A large male polar bear that refused to leave the immediate area around the community had to be put down as a safety kill in Rankin Inlet this past week.
It was the first safety kill of a polar bear in Rankin this year.
