Man hospitalized after early morning stabbing
Yellowknife police are looking for a man identified as "Nick" after another man was taken to hospital with an "apparent knife wound" early Thursday morning, according to an RCMP news release. Officers were called to a home over a stabbing around 3:30 a.m. and found a man suffering from a knife wound. The suspect was last seen leaving with two black eyes and facial injuries, wearing a black hooded sweater, green T-shirt and baggy jeans, walking downtown from Gitzel Street.

Nomination deadline for Order of the NWT today
Today is the final day that nominations will be accepted for the Order of the NWT. The legislative assembly issued a news release this week calling on NWT residents to nominate a person from their community who has made an outstanding contribution benefiting the people of the NWT and Canadians.

CIBC hosts Run for Our Lives launch
Officials from CIBC and the Stanton Territorial Hospital Foundation will be unveiling changes to this year's Run for Our Lives cancer fundraising program today, as well as a new logo. For the past two years the event has featured health awareness sessions in place of an actual run. This year, the run returns and will be held Oct. 2 in Yellowknife. Money raised will go toward the hospital foundation to be used for cancer treatment facilities at Stanton. The launch will be held at the CIBC branch at 11 a.m.

Military ombudsman in NWT next week
The ombudsman for National Defence and Canadian Armed Forces will be in the NWT next week to meet with soldiers, Canadian Rangers and military families.
Gary Welbourne and his team will be in Yellowknife from Tuesday through Friday for a series of meetings with various Joint Task Force North members including the commanding officer, medical staff and the military housing clerk. His mission is to hear any concerns from armed forces members and, if warranted, file a report with the minister of Defence.

Alcohol seized in Liard
Two individuals have been arrested for illegally selling alcohol within Fort Liard, according to a news release from RCMP.
The individuals were not identified by RCMP. An April 4 news release police seized alcohol from a vehicle three days prior after investigating the illegal sale of alcohol in the community.
The individuals were charged with unlawful sale of liquor and sale of liquor to an intoxicated person.
RCMP seized the vehicle as well as all property related to the offence.
A photo of the seized liquor provided by police shows 11 bottles of vodka, five of which have mini bottles of rum attached.
Open Sky calls for contributors
The Open Sky Creative Society in Fort Simpson has announced the dates for its annual festival which will take place this year from July 2 to 3.
The festival marks Open Sky's 16th annual event.
The organization has put out a call to artists, musicians, performers and vendors from around the Northwest Territories to submit applications in order to be a part of the festival.
An e-mailed announcement from the organization notes "both new entries and alumni are welcome."
Application forms are available on Open Sky's website or by contacting the society.
Winter roads closed
The Mackenzie Valley winter road system is officially closed, according to the Department of Transportation, along with the Trout Lake access.
The department made the announcement on its social media account on March 31.
The closure includes the Deline access.
Ice crossings in the Deh Cho were still operational as of April 4, including the Liard crossing to Fort Simpson, the Wrigley crossing and the Nahanni Butte ice crossing.
Premier visits Deh Cho
Northwest Territories Premier Bob McLeod was expected to be in Fort Simpson on April 8 to meet with Grand Chief Herb Norwegian.
McLeod will also be visiting Fort Liard this week, with meetings scheduled for April 7.
Nahendeh MLA Shane Thompson said the Fort Liard trip will have the premier meeting in regard to the Acho Dene Koe First Nation's land claim process, followed by a public meeting to hear community concerns.
The Fort Simpson leg of the journey will not include a public meeting.
Shots fired
Police responded to a report of shots being fired on Gwich'in Road around 3 a.m. April 3.
Upon arrival on the scene, officers apprehended two men, aged 28 and 33, and located a gun. According to RCMP Cpl. Darryl MacMullin, subsequent investigation lead members to a residence where shots had also been fired. Police secured the scene and found no danger to the public. No one was injured in the incident. MacMullin said firearms offence related charges, as well as breach of conditions charges are pending.
Tsiigehtchic man faces manslaughter charge
Wayne MacDonald, 54, of Tsiigehtchic has been charged with manslaughter after an incident April 4.
Police officers from the Fort McPherson detachment responded to a report of a domestic disturbance in Tsiigehtchic. When they arrived, a man was found to be unresponsive, even after CPR was performed. He was later pronounced dead, states a news release from RCMP Const. Elenore Sturko. The accused, whom police say was known to the victim, was arrested on the scene.
He has been remanded into custody and is expected to appear in territorial court in Yellowknife, April. 7.
Firefighters ball on way
The annual Firefighters Ball has been scheduled to take place May 7 at the Midnight Sun Complex.
Cocktails will begin at 6 p.m. with dinner to follow at 7 p.m., and entertainment to be provided by comedian and magician Chris Yaill. The theme is 'an evening in the enchanted forest.' Tickets are available at the fire hall or directly from volunteer firefighters.
Reading Rascals invites children
The Inuvik Centennial Library is hosting its Reading Rascals program for parents and guardians with children under five years old.
The program takes place every Monday morning from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and features some books, crafts and a small snack. The program is free of charge and all are welcome.
The art of the scare
The horror-movie film fest Dead North is stopping in Inuvik this week, with a presentation of several short horror and genre films from the last four years. The event will take place in the community lounge at the Midnight Sun Complex starting at 8 p.m. April 9. Admission is by donation for local organizations helping those less fortunate. Event organizer Dez Loreen of Inuvik said teenagers who love horror are welcome but this is not an event for children. A film by Loreen and another by JD Jones of Inuvik will be featured at the show.
