Man faces second-degree murder charge

Thirty-year-old Stanley Deneza Abel Junior now faces a second degree murder charge after Herman Abel, the victim of a March 30 attack in Dettah, died in hospital last Wednesday.

Defence attorney Tu Pham asked for the matter to be adjourned to May 3, to allow the Crown to provide a disclosure of their case. Crown prosecutor Marc Lecorre said it will take six weeks to get the disclosure ready. Territorial court judge Robert Gorin scheduled Abel's next appearance for May 3.

Mine closure plan approved

The Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Board approved a De Beers Canada plan detailing how it will take care of its dormant Snap Lake diamond mine on March 31.

The plan sets out various aspects of how the site will be cared for and maintained in the period when production has ceased at the mine about 220 km northeast of Yellowknife.

The company announced in December it would halt production, lay off more than 400 employees while transferring some to its Gahcho Kue diamond mine still under construction. That mine is expected to be complete this year.

Campsite booking opens

Campers will be able to make online reservations for NWT campsites starting tomorrow. Beginning at 10 a.m., the public can book campsites at all territorial campgrounds expect for Fred Henne Territorial Park. Campsites at Fred Henne can be reserved online starting this Friday. The camping season opens on May 13 with the exception of Sambaa Deh Falls Territorial Park and Fort Simpson Territorial Park which open on May 20. Blackstone Territorial Park and parks located on the Dempster Highway will open on June 1.

Dene chief credits bishops

Dene National Chief Bill Erasmus is praising the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops for admitting that the Christian churches mistreated indigenous people, specifically the Dene. Last month, the bishops supported doing away with the outdated Doctrine of Discovery and the notion of "no man's land."

Erasmus also supports the bishops' acknowledgment of indigenous human rights.

Junior Canucks team chosen

Kivalliq

Listed below are the atom players representing the region as the Kivalliq Junior Canucks at the Aboriginal Hockey Tournament in Winnipeg from April 8 to 10.

The event is hosted by the Manitoba Aboriginal Sports and Recreation Council.

The Junior Canucks are managed by Gleason Uppahuak of Arviat and coached by David Clark of Rankin Inlet.

Travelling with the team as trainers are Daniel Kablutsiak of Arviat and Keenan Eetuk of Rankin.

Commission launches Inuktitut version of website

The Workers' Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC) announced the launch of the Inuktitut version of its website in Yellowknife this past week.

The WSCC commits to increasing knowledge and understanding of its services and improving stakeholder access to those services.

In support of these goals, the WSCC developed and launched an Inuktitut version of its website.

"We are pleased to support Inuit culture and language, and offer our Inuktitut-speaking stakeholders access to important WSCC safety information," wrote Dave Grundy, WSCC president and chief executive officer, in a news release.

"We operate in a vast and varied jurisdiction and we understand the importance of being accessible to the people we serve every day."

Baker competes in Balsillie Cup

Baker Lake is set to send a team to the Canadian North Balsillie Cup oldtimers hockey tournament in Yellowknife this coming weekend.

The Baker squad will be the only representative from Nunavut to compete at the event, after Rankin Inlet was forced to withdraw due to difficulties in icing a competitive team this year.

A celebration of seal

26.

The twohour-plus gathering at the community hall also featured throatsinging, a feast, games and a dazzling array of sealthemed items.

The event was organized by Kathleen Merritt of Rankin.

Pakallak Tyme dates announced

Rankin Inlet

April 25 to May 1 were announced as the official dates for this year's Pakallak Tyme celebrations in Rankin Inlet this past month.

The hamlet also announced the annual fishing derby will be held from May 20 to May 23, with measuring to take please outside the community hall on May 24.
