The Centre for Northern Families is planning to purchase a new building, a move that may allow more women to take shelter at its Franklin Avenue location.

Bree Denning, executive director of the centre that offers shelter for women plus a daycare, said the plans haven't been finalized.

The news was revealed during two days of meetings to address homelessness in the city this week.

According to interviews with several attendees, the plan laid out at the meeting involves moving some of the centre's services to the future building while the shelter remains where it is.

"The Centre for Northern Families that we know of today will be strictly for homeless women from what I understand," said Lorraine Phaneuf, executive director of the Status of Women Council of the NWT.

There are also plans to revamp the exterior of the existing structure, including replacing windows.

Denning said details of the projects would be available later.
