No one hurt in Sunridge Place fire
There was a lot of smoke, but no injuries after a fire at the Sunridge Place apartment on 51a Avenue on Saturday afternoon. According to Dennis Marchiori, the city's public safety director, the small blaze broke out in the kitchen and filled much of the building with smoke that had to be cleared out. Firefighters were on scene for about an hour and a half, stated Marchiori in an e-mail.

Flu hospitalizes 10
Ten people have been hospitalized in the territory because of the seasonal flu, according to a health advisory issued by the GNWT last week.
As of March 3, 61 cases of the flu have been confirmed in communities around the territory, including the capital. While the season began with the N2N3 type of the flu, the advisory stated the predominate strain is now H1N1, which was commonly called Swine Flu.
Both strains were included in the flu vaccine. Less than 10 per cent of those with confirmed cases of the flu were vaccinated, the advisory states.

Refugee support group to hold meeting
A group fundraising to support Syrian refugee families that are expected to arrive in Yellowknife will meet again today at 7 p.m. in the library.
The group, meeting bi-weekly, is planning to raise $20,000 per family that comes here, according to a Tuesday news release from Yellowknifers Supporting Syrian Refugees.
Two sponsor groups have been matched with refugee families so far.
Several fundraising events are planned to meet the goal, such as musical performances as well as donations from business groups and non-governmental organizations.

Market seeks vendors
The Yellowknife Farmers Market is taking applications from potential vendors for the upcoming season until March 20.
To qualify, vendors must sell locally made or locally harvested goods in five categories: agricultural or wild harvested products, processed products, baked goods, food concessions, and artisanal items.
All food vendors must have their product approved by GNWT environmental health inspectors.
The market is held outside at Somba K'e Civic Plaza beside city hall.

Youth leader selected
Naujaat
Suzanne Putulik was selected as the Youth Leadership Champion for Nunavut by the North West Company and the Northern store this past month.
Putulik was selected for her great work and dedication to her school, peers and community.
Her prize winnings for taking the title include roundtrip tickets for two to Winnipeg, hotel accommodations, two tickets to the Winnipeg Jets hockey game on March 8, two passes to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and funds to cover her meal and transportation costs.
Tusarvik School viceprincipal Julia MacPherson said she nominated Putulik for the title because of her outstanding volunteer work in the school and community.
"She is one of the few female fire fighters, she works for our prenatal cooking program, and she helps out in the school for major events, our breakfast program and other various schoolrelated functions," said MacPherson. "She is always willing to lend a hand and comes to school every day."

Rankin Inlet/Kivalliq
Ten teams are competing in this year's Avataq Cup senior men's hockey championship in Rankin Inlet from March 9 to 13.
The lineup of entries includes the Seadogs, Iceholes, Miners, Chiefs and Team Todd from the host community, as well as squads from Naujaat, Coral Harbour, Whale Cove, Arviat and Chesterfield Inlet.
Day passes will be sold at one per person for each of the five days of the event. The number of passes for each day will be limited to 503.

The Arviat Wolves atoms hockey team was one of the January winners in the new Best Western Hotels Team of the Month national contest for participating minor hockey associations across Canada.
The Wolves shared their experiences on the road in the contest and received $1,000 in Best Western travel cards for being named one of January's winning teams.
Minister resigns
Iqaluit/Nunavut
Former Nunavut premier Paul Okalik resigned his cabinet portfolio this past week in protest of the Government of Nunavut's plans to open a wine and beer store in the territorial capital.
A full 77 per cent of Iqaluit residents voted in favour of the store during a plebiscite held about 10 months ago.
Okalik, the MLA for IqaluitSinaa, was holding the portfolios for health, justice, the minister responsible for the Human Rights Tribunal, the Labour Standards Board, Suicide Prevention and Immigration at the time of his resignation this past Thursday, March 3.
Flag bearer chosen from the Kivalliq
Arviat
Team Nunavut female wrestler Shelby Angidlik, 17, of Arviat was selected to carry Nunavut's flag at the opening ceremonies of the 2016 Arctic Winter games in Nuuk, Greenland, on March 6.
Angidlik won two silver medals in wrestling at the 2014 AWG in Fairbanks, Alaska, one for Inuit wrestling and one for free-style. The Arviat teenager is also a threetime Nunavut territorial wrestling champion.
