Jay project gets the go-ahead
A project proposed by Dominion Diamond Corp., which would see Ekati's mine life extended by 10 years has received the green light from the Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board. Approval of the Jay project could unlock more long-term opportunities at the site and is "critical" to the North, CEO Brendan Bell said last fall. Conditions set out by the review board include provisions to protect caribou and water quality along with the establishment of an Elder's advisory group.

TerraX named one to watch
On its 2016 junior miners watch list, Haywood Securitie' identified 13 companies demonstrating potential in the first quarter. The NWT's only mention was TerraX Minerals Inc., which is conducting exploratory drilling at the Yellowknife City Gold project south of the city. Kennady Diamonds, which has also seen success over the last year at its Kennady North project, adjacent to the Gahcho Kue mine, was not mentioned.

Break-in at Liquor Shop
Police were dispatched to an alarm and attempted break-in at the Liquor Shop on Borden Drive early Saturday morning, according to a news release. RCMP members attending the scene in the early hours of Jan. 20 detained one male and an investigation led to breaking and entering charges being laid against two men in their 20s, states the release. Anyone with further information is urged to contact Yellowknife RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

Northwestel lowers data overrun charge
Northwestel customers who go over their monthly data use caps will pay less starting this month, according to a news release.
The company has dropped its overage charge by 50 cents per gigabyte on non-satellite packages.
"We know our customers want more affordable options for getting the most out of their Internet," Curtis Shaw, vice-president of residential markets, stated in the release.

Powerful peewees hit the ice
Rankin Inlet
A total of eight teams were set to compete in the annual Powerful Peewee hockey tournament in Rankin Inlet this past weekend.
Three teams from host Rankin, as well as squads from Iqaluit, Baker Lake, Arviat, Coral Harbour and Team Kivalliq were scheduled to compete at the event.
Final results were not known as of press time.
