Government changes its mandate document
Ten regular MLAs voted to favour of a motion to drop the fiscal forecast portion of the 18th Legislative Assembly's mandate on Monday.
Frame Lake MLA Kevin O'Reilly pointed out the mandate stated that federal transfer payments would be reduced by $33 million when Finance Mnister Robert C. McLeod last week said the reduction would only be $9 million annually.
The motion was introduced by Yellowknife North MLA Cory Vanthuyne who said that the fiscal context portion of the mandate was "not appropriate."

Acting ITI deputy minister named
Premier Bob McLeod has announced Kelly Kaylo has been named acting deputy minister of the Department of Industry Tourism and Investment (ITI).
She takes over for Peter Vician, who is retiring from the territorial government after 34 years of service. According to a news release, a search is underway to find a permanent replacement for Vician. Kaylo joined the GNWT as assistant deputy minister of ITI in 2012. She has 30 years experience in the areas of transportation, tourism, mining, oil and gas and small business, the release stated.

Patient missing from Stanton found in Ndilo
A patient who had been reported missing by staff at Stanton Territorial Hospital last Wednesday has been found safe in Ndilo.
According to an RCMP news release, Roland Yendo, 58, was located the following evening and returned to the hospital. They did not say exactly what led them to Yendo or where he had been while police searched for him.

Artists gather for fundraiser
As a way to raise awareness on the needs of Yellowknifers, one photographer is inviting artists and art-lovers to donate canned goods to the YK Food Bank.
Steve Schwarz is hosting a Photography Food Raiser event this evening from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Yellowknife Public Library meeting room.
There, several visual artists will host talks about their work.
Admission is by donation.

Coaches receive training
Arviat
A group of 16 community members gathered at Nunavut Arctic College to begin their accreditation under the National Coaching Certificate Program earlier this month.
The program's Introduction to Coaching is regarded as a substantial add on to the college's teacher course, particularly for preservice teachers who need to be equipped to one day conduct after school, intramural, extracurricular and community activities.
Hockey tournament rescheduled

The Arctic Atoms hockey tournament has been rescheduled to March 18 to 20 in Rankin Inlet.
Teams from at least five different Kivalliq communities are scheduled to compete at the event, with players from all seven communities expected to take part.
Baker Lake resident wins Indspire Award

Laura Arngna'naaq of Baker Lake was one of 14 First Nations, Inuit and Metis achievers to be recognized with a 2016 Indspire Award in Vancouver, B.C., earlier this month. Arngna'naaq was the winner of Indspire's Inuit Youth award.
The Indspire Awards have celebrated the highest contributions of indigenous people in Canada for 23 years, and are aligned with Indspire's mandate to provide educational support and programs for future generations to succeed.
Game on for Kivalliq Canucks

The Kivalliq Canucks will square off against the Baffin Blizzard this coming weekend, Feb. 26 to 28, in a bestofthree series for the Challenge Cup junior 'C' championship in Rankin Inlet.
The winner of the tourney will represent Nunavut at the annual MaritimeHockey North Junior 'C' Championship in Fredericton Junction, N.B., from March 30 to April 3.
The Blizzard captured Nunavut's first title at the event in 2015, and would return to the tournament as defending champions if they can get past the Canucks.
Tickets for the Challenge Cup series are limited to 503 per game in Rankin.
