Police investigating Monkey Tree armed robbery

Yellowknife RCMP are investigating an armed robbery at the Monkey Tree Gas Bar on Range Lake Road shortly before 7 p.m. on Jan. 14, according to a news release. A man - dressed in dark clothing with his face covered - entered the gas bar and brandished a knife before leaving with a small amount of cash. The city's RCMP detachment and general investigation section are reviewing surveillance footage from the store.

Guilty pleas on buying illegal fish

Old Town business owners Sam Bullock and Bud Weaver pleaded guilty to buying fish from a person without a commercial fishing licence in territorial court Jan. 13. The two admitted to buying pickerel fillets from Narcisse Chocolate - a fisherman with a business licence from the Town of Behchoko which does not permit him to sell to the city fish vendors. Crown prosecutor Maren Zimmer said both men co-operated with investigators and surrendered their records. Territorial court judge Bernadette Schmaltz scheduled Weaver and Bullock for sentencing on Feb. 25.

Union, GNWT start bargaining talks

The territorial government and the Union of Northern Workers began talks for a new collective agreement Jan. 14. The sides appear to share common ground on issues such as rest periods, safe disclosure and mental health in the workplace, according to a UNW memo to its members. Bargaining resumes Jan. 26. The collective agreement between the sides expires March 31.

The territorial government's bargaining proposal opens by outlining its increasingly dire fiscal situation, including a potential loss of $34 million in transfer payments from the federal government this year.

Alternatives North to host budget discussion

Social policy organization Alternatives North is hosting a presentation and public discussion tonight on revenue and budget options for the territorial government at Northern United Place at 7 p.m. According to a news release, there will be an audience discussion of alternatives that don't damage the economy by cutting government spending.

Meeting over national park

Naujaat

The Ukkusiksalik National Park Inuit knowledge working group will be meeting with Parks Canada and local knowledge holders in Naujaat from Jan. 25 to 27.

The focus of the meetings will be to discuss projects related to the park and Inuit knowledge.

Blizzard knocks out exams

Kivalliq

Grade 12 students in the Kivalliq communities of Arviat, Baker Lake, Rankin Inlet and Whale Cove will have to wait about six months to write their final exam in English Language Arts after a blizzard closed their schools this past Wednesday, Jan. 13.

Students can only write the Alberta standardized departmental exam on specific dates to prevent cheating on the exam.

More than 100 students in the Kivalliq and Baffin regions were prevented from writing the exam due to inclement weather.

Listed below are the teams in the two divisions of the JLM (Jon Lindell memorial) Calm Air Cup senior men's hockey tournament this coming weekend in Arviat from Jan. 21 to 24.

The top three teams in each division reach the playoffs following round-robin play, with the two first-place teams earning a bye to the semifinals.

A Division: Rankin Inlet 'A', Karetakers, Arviat Kings, Arviat Bulldogs

B Division: Arviat Stars, Rankin Inlet 'B', Whale Cove, Arviat Wolves

Making a difference

Kivalliq

The Kivalliq Inuit Association (KIA) is looking for women willing to take a series of workshops during the next two years to assist them and other women in their community to develop skills and tools to create a positive change in their hometown.

The KIA is looking for women who are proactive, willing to make a difference in their hometown, ready to take action on violence experienced in the home, willing to make a difference for the children of their community and who are team players and team builders who want to start a team in their community.

An introductory workshop will be held from March 18 to 24 in Rankin Inlet.

The deadline for applying is Feb. 5.
