Violent offender gets eight months in jail

Jonah Keyuajuk, 45, was sentenced Tuesday to eight months in jail and three years probation for failing to comply with a court-ordered curfew shortly after the violent sexual offender was the subject of a rare public warning from RCMP.

Keyuajuk received 1.5 days credit for each of the 93 days spent in custody awaiting the outcome of the case. That means his eight months in jail has been reduced by 141 days.

Keyuajuk, 45, was found guilty by the judge after being charged for not presenting himself to police Sept. 19.

Raymond Simpson died of presumed fall

The chief coroner of the NWT has ruled a man found deceased in a downtown alley on Apr. 3 did not freeze to death as had been widely speculated. Cathy Menard said Raymond Simpson, 43, died from head trauma due to a presumed fall. She said acute alcohol intoxication was a contributing factor. Simpson's body was found in the alley between 48 and 49 Street, according to an RCMP news release.

Reporter's trial rescheduled

Yellowknifer reporter John McFadden's trial has been rescheduled to May 2, almost 10 months after he was arrested and charged with obstruction of a peace officer downtown while taking photos of RCMP officers searching a vehicle.

The trial had been expected to take place Dec. 18 but didn't because McFadden, 53, hired a different lawyer. McFadden, who was covering police and the court system for the newspaper at the time, was re-assigned to cover other beats while his case proceeded.

Quilliq energy warns of scam

Kivalliq/Nunavut

The Qulliq Energy Corp. (QEC) is warning Nunavummiut of a telephone scam that has targeted utility customers across Canada.

Customers are receiving calls from people claiming to be utility representatives.

The caller tells the customer their power will be disconnected if they do not make an immediate payment with a prepaid credit card.

QEC is reminding customers it does not demand bill payment over the telephone. If an account is in arrears, QEC's first step is to hand deliver a written notice. It then works with the customer on a repayment plan to avoid disconnection.

Should a customer receive a suspicious call, they are being advised to hang up immediately and report it to the Canadian AntiFraud Centre at 1-8884958501.
