Don't panic, it's just a test

The GNWT stated in a news release it plans to test its emergency alert system today at 1:55 p.m., according to a statement about the NWT Alert Ready system.

The system will provide alerts to residents in emergencies and disasters and is part of a national system.

The NWT alert system is expected to be operational in 2016.

Premier, Speaker and cabinet decided today

MLAs will be voting today for the next premier of the NWT as well as a Speaker and six cabinet ministers at the legislative assembly.

The session begins at 9 a.m. with the selection of a Speaker.

That is followed by the selection of the premier at 10 a.m. Bob McLeod and Glen Abernethy are the two MLAs seeking the premiership. At 1 p.m., members will return to select the cabinet.

Two ministers will be selected from the northern parts of the territory, two from Yellowknife, and two from the southern parts of the territory.

Truth and Reconciliation report released

The final report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada was released yesterday, bringing the six-year investigation into the legacy of residential schools to a close.

The preliminary report was released in June, including 94 recommendations ranging from changes to school curriculum to seeking an apology from the Pope.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has begun an inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal women, which was one of the recommendations.

Salvation Army edging closer to campaign goal

Salvation Army Yellowknife reported its Christmas campaign has raised $26,236 as of Tuesday. Kettles to collect donations have been placed at Canadian Tire, Wal-Mart, the Liquor Store and the post office during lunch hour since Nov. 19 and will continue to Dec. 23.

Executive director Dusty Sauder said he was optimistic, saying kettle figures surpassed last year's tally as of last week.

The overall campaign goal has been $100,000. About $67,000 was made overall last year and Sauder said the final tally will not be known until mid-January.

Fair takes sciences to the forefront

Rankin Inlet

Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik (MUI) held its annual science fair to select the students with the best projects to represent MUI at the 2016 Kivalliq Regional Science Fair this past week.

Administrators did not want to release the names of winners until the final student assembly, set to be held on Dec. 17 at MUI.

Area cadet officer for the Eastern Arctic, Capt. Tad Nicol, will be retiring from full-time service this coming March, after serving in the military for more than 30 years.

Capt. Nichol spent time throughout the territories and was wellknown to cadets in Rankin and Naujaat during those years.

Territorial results

Arviat/Rankin Inlet

Four male and one female wrestler from Rankin Inlet, and one female wrestler from Arviat, were selected to Represent Nunavut at the 2016 Arctic Winter Games (AWG) after their golden performances at the Nunavut wrestling territorial championship in Iqaluit this past month.

Making the AWG squad from Rankin are AJ Curley, Elliott Adams, Tommy Tugak, Troy Makpah and Tanya Tugak, with Arviat's Shelby Angalik also selected.

Listed here are the weight classes each of the wrestlers won at the territorial: Kennedy Napayok (57kg boys), AJ Curley (62kg boys), Elliott Adams (68kg boys), Troy Makpah (75kg boys), Shelby Angalik (50kg girls) and Tanya Tugak (55kg girls).

Concert comes to John Arnalukjuak

Music lovers received a special treat with an ensemble performance of holiday music at John Arnalukjuak High School in Arviat on Dec. 10.

The concert featured ensembles of Grade 5, 10, 11 and 12 students playing guitar, while the finale was a performance by the Arviat Philharmonic Orchestra.

The orchestra consists of conductor Curtis Metcalf, with Charlene Paterson, Kimberley Dymond, Margaret Reist, Shelby Angalik, Malena Alareak and Amalea Gibbons on clarinet, Kaia Paterson and Alissa Matoo on flute, Kelsey Nickel on trumpet, Ross Paterson and Gord Billard on trombone, Malachi Paungalak on drums, Phil Rivoire on bass and Amanda MacLaughlin on the jingle bells.

The ensemble of musicians performed the holiday standard, Jingle Bells, as well as two original pieces by Metcalfe, Tikirarjuak Arnait (Git yer antlers on) and Whale Cove Rock.
