A Franklin Avenue building was heavily damaged by a fire that occurred shortly after midnight on Nov. 7.

The City of Yellowknife Fire Division responded to the late night blaze after an area resident reported black smoke billowing out of the house at 12:42 a.m.

The building, located at 5608 Franklin Ave. between the Larga Kitikmeot Boarding Home and the Centre for Northern Families, was believed to be unoccupied during the fire, according a city news release.

The boarding home was evacuated during the neighbouring fire due to strong winds, heavy smoke and flames.

The 14-person fire crew successfully protected uncovered insulation at an adjacent construction site.

Staff from the NWT Fire Marshall's Office, RCMP officers and firefighters were still at the scene on Saturday morning.

No injuries were reported after boarding house tenants were assessed as a precaution.

The fire was deemed suspicious, according to the news release issued by the city on Saturday morning.
