RANKIN INLET
Ghouls, ghosts, witches, superheroes and creatures from galaxies near and far were on display in Leo Ussak Elementary School's annual Halloween Parade in Rankin Inlet this past week.

The vast majority of the school's staff members and 285 students from kindergarten to Grade 4 took part.

The students were divided into their home rooms in kindergarten, as well as three classes each from Grades 1 through 4, before being led around the gym by a class banner bearer.

A large crowd of parents and friends were on hand to admire the costumes. School co-principal Sarah Ayaruak said the students look forward to the Halloween Parade every year.

She said the idea is to let the kids have some fun at school leading up to their big night of trick or treating.

"This is not a contest or a competition," said Ayaruak.

"It's a parade for the students to show off their costumes, as well as see what the other kids are wearing in a safe environment.

"We have a morning and an afternoon kindergarten class, so the morning students are taken around from class to class to show the other kids their costumes.

"All our teachers also get into the spirit, so it's a lot of fun for everybody."

Ayaruak said most of the students prefer wearing costumes of modern characters, rather then traditional Halloween outfits of vampires, ghouls, ghosts and goblins.

She said the witch remains the most popular of the traditional costumes among the students.

"The Frozen characters are popular with some of the kids at the school, and Batman, Spiderman, Star Wars and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles remain big with a lot of the students. This year we had goodie bags donated to every student by Calm Air.

"The teachers handed them out in the morning, and they had treats like peanut-free chocolate bars, lollipops and Nibs in them.

"It was a nice day of good fun for the kids."
