Three candidates for mayor in Cambridge Bay
Kugaaruk has most people seeking seats on hamlet council

With municipal elections coming up Dec. 14, only one community in the Kitikmeot region is electing a mayor - Cambridge Bay.

Mayor Joanni Sallerina of Gjoa Haven and Mayor Joe Ashevak of Taloyoak both have one year remaining on their terms, while Mayor Ryan Nivingalok of Kugluktuk and Mayor Stephan Inaksajak of Kugaaruk have two years remaining.

Incumbent Jeannie Ehaloak, Leonard Epilon and Keith Lear Sr. are looking to be elected to the position of mayor of Cambridge Bay.

All five communities have four to five seats open for council and all will have races to fill those seats, except Gjoa Haven. Five councillors have been acclaimed to five seats in that community.

These are the candidates running for council in the remaining four communities:

Vying for four two-year council positions in Cambridge Bay are Wayne Gregory, Sarah Jancke, Keith Lear Sr., Christina Mulhern, Joe Ohokannoak, Wilfred Wilcox, David P. Kaosoni, Bo Wallenius and Mary Rose Maksagak.

Kugluktuk's council candidates for four three-year terms are Lena Pedersen, Phillip Evaglok, Robert Grant Newman, Melissa MacDonald, Lucy Taipana, Jenny Klengenberg and Matilda Panioyak.

In Kugaaruk, the race is the most populated, with 12 candidates hoping to nab one of five seats for two-year terms. Candidates are Ovide Alakannuark, Sheila Anaittuq, Jesse Apsaktaun , Allen Immingark, Mary Kayasark, Canute Krejunark, Michael McIntyre, Makabe Nartok, John Ningark, Mary Ningark, Katherine Qirngnuq and Guido Tigvareark.

Finally, in Taloyoak, five seats are available to seven candidates, for two-year terms. They are Tommy Aiyout, James Aiyout, Rene Boisvert, Kristine Lyall, Anayoak Alookee, David Nanook and Lenny Panigayak.
