Public invited for election night
The legislative assembly will be open to the public from 6 to 10 p.m. Nov. 23 for those who want to follow the results of the general territorial election live.
Yellowknifer reported Wednesday no event would be held at the Great Hall of the legislative assembly.
However, a news release Thursday afternoon stated the building will now be open Monday evening.
Polls close at 8 p.m.

Santa Clause inbound for YZF
Santa Clause will take time away from the North Pole for a parade visit to Yellowknife on Saturday, Sandra Nielson, the city's special events coordinator said 12 floats were entered in the city's Santa Clause Parade as of Thursday. She said although the total number is down, five new floats have entered. The theme this year is Toy's Alive and the motorcade will hit 53 Street, Franklin Avenue and 48 Street from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Buses will be posted on site to keep spectators warm while they wait.

Giant Mine oversight body established
The Giant Mine Oversight Body Society has named six members to its board and elected Todd Slack as interim chair. Slack was nominated to the board by the Yellowknives Dene First Nation but he'll be replaced as chair by Kathy Racher in January, according to a news release. Stephan Gabos was appointed vice-chair and Tony Brown was appointed secretary-treasurer. The Oversight Body board of directors consists of Slack, Gabos - nominated by the North Slave Metis Alliance, Brown - nominated by the city of Yellowknife, Ken Hall, nominated by the GNWT, David Livingstone, nominated by Alternatives North, and Ginger Jones, nominated by Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada.

Students feed elders
Yellowknife Education District No. 1 hosts its Lunch With A Bunch event at the Avens - Community For Seniors today at the Baker's Centre from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Superintendent Metro Huculak said the district shares a meal with seniors twice a year.
Huculak said about five students and some Yk1 administrators will serve.

Addiction matters
National Addictions Awareness Week began Nov. 15 and ends Nov. 21 this year.
In Fort Simpson, week-long events were organized by Fort Simpson's Inter-agency Committee prioritizing wellness.
Events included a drum dance on Nov. 16 and mini hand games at Thomas Simpson Secondary School the following day. The Deh Cho Friendship Centre hosted a family games night Nov. 17, which bracketed one of the twice-weekly Alcoholics Anonymous meetings held at the Stanley Isaiah Wellness Centre.
Residents planned to hold a sober walk and recovery celebration along with a coffee house on Nov. 19, among other scheduled events.
Territorial election looms
On Nov. 23, Deh Cho and Nahendeh riding residents will go to the polls to vote in their new MLAs.
Advanced polls opened Nov. 16 across the ridings, except for Nahanni Butte, where polls were delayed one day due to weather.
In the Deh Cho, Nov. 23 general election polls will be located at the Nahecho Keh Centre in Fort Providence, the band office in Kakisa, the Chief Lamalice Complex on the Hay River Reserve and the hamlet office in Enterprise.
The Nahendeh will have six polling stations open. Community members can cast their votes at the band offices in Jean Marie River, Trout Lake, Wrigley and Nahanni Butte. Polling stations will also be open at the community halls in Fort Liard and Fort Simpson.
Hamlets prepare for municipal races
Nominations for hamlet elections closed Nov. 16 in Fort Liard and Fort Providence.
A candidate list was not immediately available at press time.
Candidates have until Nov. 25 to withdraw their names and election day is currently set for Dec. 14.
Fort Liard will be electing a mayor and six councillors for a two-year term, while Fort Providence will elect a mayor and three councillors for a three-year term.
Fort Simpson seeks full development board
The Village of Fort Simpson is on a tight timeline to find a third resident to flesh out its development appeal board.
On Nov. 16, councillors approved the appointment of Tom Wilson, Robert Norwegian and Coun. Charles Blyth to the board but are required to find a fourth member before the board sits on Dec. 7. The board was convened in response to an appeal letter from Liidlii Kue Fist Nation regarding a development permit. The board is required to hear the appeal within 30 days of receipt of that letter.
Advance polls opening
The territorial election is Nov. 23 but residents have the option to cast their ballots in an advance poll.
Voting will be open for both Boot Lake and Twin Lakes electoral districts at the Blackstone Building on Kingmingya Road from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 19 and 20. It will also be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 21.
On the day of the election, however, residents in Twin Lakes will vote between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. at Ingamo Hall while Boot Lake residents will go to the Midnight Sun Complex to cast their votes.
Warming centre AGM coming up
The Inuvik Emergency Warming Centre Society has announced its annual general meeting will be held Nov. 29 at the Igloo Church hall. Anyone looking to become involved in the centre is welcome and encouraged to attend. The society is specifically looking for new board members to help it move forward this season.
Education authority hosting feast
The Inuvik District Education Authority is hosting a feast along with its annual general meeting Nov. 24 in the East Three School Gym.
The meeting will include reports from the chairperson of the DEA and principal of the school, as well as a financial report and public question period.
Students, their parents and guardians, and the public are invited to attend and voice their concerns and ideas for the future. The feast will begin at 5 p.m. and the meeting will start at 7 p.m.
Tribal council to mail payments
The Gwich'in Tribal Council plans to send $371 to each participant from the 2015 fiscal year. And family-based Christmas hampers will be distributed starting Dec. 8.
In a news release, the GTC asked that participants ensure their mailing addresses are correct and up to date and registered with the enrolment officer.
In total, $1,180, 893 will be distributed to 3,183 participants this year, both inside and outside the Gwich'in Settlement Area. Hampers will be provided for 814 households.
Inuvialuit women sought for forum
Pauktuutit, a national non-profit representing Inuit women in Canada, is inviting Inuvialuit women to participate in a forum about labour in Inuvik.
The meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 19 at the Midnight Sun Complex, with refreshments available and door prizes to be won.
Women are invited to share their experiences in starting their own businesses and finding employment.
