Kissarvik retail manager Glenn Woodford said this was the third year for the promotion and students at Simon Alaittuq School (SAS) were added to those at Leo Ussak Elementary School.

He said the top entries of each class in both schools were given first ($30), second ($20) and third place ($10) Co-op gift certificates.

"You might say we broadened our horizons by adding the students at SAS to the Co-op Week Colouring Contest this year," said Woodford.

"We included the second school so we could get our message out to more kids that we're a community-owned store that helps, and wants to give back to, the community.

"The younger the kids are, if they buy into a message you send them, the better the chances they'll bring that message home to Mom, Dad and the family.

"We hold the contest during Co-op Week because it's a time when we recognize our membership, and that includes our board of directors for our all locally-owned store.

"Our elementary and middle-school students are our future members and owners of the Co-op, so it's a way of getting them on board early."

The contest received about 300 entries this year.

Woodford said judging was done by the Kissarvik management team of himself, Walter Morey and Glen Dagley.

He said board member Johnny Ayaruaq came along to the two schools to present the gift certificates.

"It was even tougher to pick the winners this year with so many good entries.

"The contest is a lot of fun to host and we hope it continues on for many years.

"And, while I can't speak for other communities, I am hoping the message will get out on the contest and our other Co-ops will follow suit.

"The prizes we give to the kids are adsorbed by our own Kissarvik Co-op here in Rankin."
