Remembrance Day ceremony today

The city's Remembrance Day ceremonies were scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. today at the cenotaph in front of RCMP headquarters.

After a wreath-laying ceremony, attendees are invited to march to an indoor service in the gym at St. Patrick High School. The parade reforms after the ceremony for a walk back to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 164 for lunch.

A Remembrance Day concert takes place at St. Patrick's Church from 3 to 5 p.m.

Deadline for 'Toys Alive' parade approaching

The deadline to enter a float at the Santa Claus Parade is fast approaching. Sandra Nielsen, special events co-ordinator with the city said the deadline is Nov. 19.

The event is to take place Nov. 21 beginning at 6 p.m. The city stated in an e-mail the parade will follow its usual route from city hall through the downtown core to Sir John Franklin School.

Floats are to have a Toys Alive theme and judges will announce the winners Nov. 23.

Heritage preservation talk at the legislature

The NWT Association of Landscape Architects is hosting guest speaker Ron Williams at the legislative assembly Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

The presentation is part of Williams' cross-country book tour to raise awareness about the challenges surrounding heritage preservation and resource extraction.

His book, Landscape Architecture in Canada, showcases the role landscape architects have played in Canadian history as well as perspectives on some of the country's most iconic landscapes and parks.

First National Jersey Day to be marked

The City of Yellowknife is encouraging citizens to wear their favourite sports jerseys to work or school this year in hopes of winning a prize.

On Nov. 20, the city is asking students and employees to wear their favourite colours and get others to join in the community spirit for a group photo.

After photos are taken, they can be submitted to the city for the chance to win a prize.

Christmas dinner returns

Chesterfield Inlet

A number of Calm Air staff will be on their way to Chesterfield Inlet and Rankin Inlet to make the holidays a little brighter for students and school staff in the two communities.

The airline will be hosting its annual Calm Air Christmas Dinner at Victor Sammurtok School in Chester on Dec. 8 and Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik in Rankin on Dec. 9.

It addition to the great holiday dinner with all the fixings, Calm Air traditionally brings a Santa Claus-sized bag of presents to be randomly drawn for during the feast.

Calm Air announced it would begin hosting the annual holiday dinner in two communities in December of 2015 shortly after its 2014 visit to Arviat.

Naujaat/Rankin Inlet

Good hockey Samaritan Barry Hickman has been continuing his efforts to ensure every Kivalliq youth who wants to play hockey has the opportunity to do

so.

Hickman, a retired RCMP officer who spent time in Nunavut during his career, has been shipping pallets of used hockey equipment to Kivalliq communities for the past few years from his British Columbia home.

The gear is distributed through Hickman's program, Northern Dreams: A Smile One Skate at a Time.

He is helped in his endeavour by J&R Hall Transport Inc., which trucks the gear to Winnipeg from British Columbia at no charge, and by Calm Air, which flies the equipment free of charge into the Kivalliq communities.

Hickman arranged for five pallets of gear to be brought to Rankin and four pallets to Naujaat this past week. The shipments also include figure skates.

The retired Mountie has also had preliminary discussion with Naujaat recreation coordinator Rodney Taparti on delivering running shoes to the community.

Cadets to compete

Rankin Inlet

The 3019 Rankin Inlet Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps will be trying to duplicate its success in Shilo, Man., when it sends a team of cadets to compete at the drill-and-skills competition in Iqaluit this coming month.

The Rankin corps captured the recent Northern Cadet Challenge in Shilo. The Rankin team will be joined in Iqaluit by members of the Naujaat drillandskills team. Naujaat took home the 2014 cadet challenge in Shilo.

Listed below are the Rankin cadets who will compete in Iqaluit from Dec. 3 to 6.

Bantams selected for Team Nunavut

Kivalliq/Nunavut

Listed below are the 10 Kivalliq players and their communities who were selected to the Team Nunavut bantam hockey squad that will compete in the 2016 Arctic Winter Games (AWG) in Iqaluit.

The players were selected at forward (F), defence (D) and goalie (G).

The head coach of the AWG Nunavut bantam team is Ryan O'Connor of Arviat.
