INUVIK
With the municipal election looming, the Drum asked all candidates to respond to a few questions in the hopes of helping community members become informed voters. Below are the answers we received from the mayoral candidates. Council candidates will give their answers in next week's edition.

Jim McDonald

1) Why are you a good fit for the position for which you are running?

I feel I am a good fit for the mayor's position because of my experience, commitment and dedication to making our community a better place to work and live.

2) What are your top priorities for the upcoming term, if elected?

If elected I will continue to pursue economic opportunities that can sustain our community in the future. I will work with industry to attract potential clients for the Inuvik Satellite Station and continue to build on our tourism sector with emphasis on capturing the Chinese and European markets.

3) What do you think is the most pressing problem in Inuvik and how do you plan to contribute to finding a solution?

The most pressing problem in Inuvik is the cost of living and I will continue to work to find a solution by looking at the potential of liquid natural gas (LNG) as a source to heat our homes, small scale gas to liquids as a fuel supply for the region and improving our transportation links south.

Derek Lindsay

1) Why are you a good fit for the position for which you are running?

I believe I am a good fit for the position of mayor because of my past experience, I served as Mayor from 2006-2009, I have been on town council since 1996 and have served 11 years as town councillor.

2) What are your top priorities for the upcoming term, if elected?

My top priorities for the upcoming term would be to: one, find more economical methods of supplying a heating source for our community; two, work with the GNWT and the other 33 communities in our territory to reduce our electrical costs, three, enhance tourism by working with all stakeholders including the Yukon government and the City of Whitehorse; four, continue to provide all the services offered by the municipality on a more economical basis.

3) What do you think is the most pressing problem in Inuvik and how do you plan to contribute to finding a solution?

The most pressing problem we face right now is residents leaving because of the high cost of living in Inuvik by reducing our high utility costs as mentioned above this should hopefully resolve this problem.
