Brew pub on its way

The long-awaited Woodyard Brewhouse and Eatery from the NWT Brewing Company is going to start dishing out some plates this week. Co-owner Fletcher Stevens said he's starting to have soft openings, with the first one for friends and family on Friday, and another for the general public on Saturday. Both will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and feature a smaller menu. Stevens said other dates and hours, including dinner service, are still being determined, but he's looking forward to the grand opening in early November.

Three judges declare conflicts

A third judge has declared a conflict of interest in the case of Wayne Guy, the owner of Guy Architects and a board member of Ramble and Ride, who is charged with conducting boat tours without a tourism licence.

On Tuesday, Judge Robert Gorin adjourned the case until Nov. 17, stating although he is not close friends with Guy, the men do know each other well enough that it would not be appropriate for Gorin to preside over this case. Judges Christine Gagnon and Brian Bruser have also made similar declarations.

Michael Nadli reportedly out of jail

Michael Nadli has formally announced that he is seeking re-election as Deh Cho MLA. In a news release issued Tuesday, Nadli stated he has taken full responsibility for his actions, which landed him in jail this month.

"It will be up (to) the people to decide whether I should continue my career that started in 1997," he stated. Nadli was sentenced to 45 days in jail for assault causing bodily harm. Another media outlet reported Tuesday he was freed from jail late last week.

Zero waste challenge laid

Ecology North is challenging Yellowknifers to make November a month where they have no waste. Jade Cambron, waste reduction project manager said the organization is introducing the One Month Zero Waste Challenge until Nov 30, during which time Yellowknifers are expected to reduce their waste.

Fond farewell for friendship centre executive director

Rankin Inlet

A gathering of friends and fellow workers presented George Dunkerley, former executive director of Pulaarvik Kablu Friendship Centre, a few gifts for his outstanding service to the community.

The group also wished Dunkerly and his family well in their new beginnings in Ontario earlier this month.

Accident leads to fatality

Baker Lake

An 80-year-old elder from Baker Lake succumbed to her injuries in a motor-vehicle accident this past week.

Mary Iqqat was thrown from her ATV when it collided with another vehicle on Oct. 17.

The elder was medevaced to Winnipeg following the accident but died at the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre on Oct. 21.

RCMP reported neither alcohol nor speed are believed to have been contributing factors to the accident.

No related charges are anticipated.

The school was not allowed to release the results until after the Oct. 19 federal election.

Premier declares suicide crisis

Nunavut

Nunavut Premier Peter Taptuna declared suicide is a crisis in the territory during a legislative assembly sitting in Iqaluit this past week.

The declaration came on the heels of a coroner's inquest and recommendations concerning the high rate of suicide in Nunavut.

Taptuna announced a special cabinet committee has been struck to follow and implement recommendations from the inquest.

The premier said swift action needs to be taken to better share information between partners, further engage with youth, provide the relevant people with adequate training and strengthen existing programs to better prevent people from taking their own lives.

Cadets compete in challenge

Members of the Naujaat cadet team who put in a strong showing while competing at the recent Army Cadet Challenge in Shilo, Man. were Master Warrant Officer Jonathan Ijjangiaq, Master Warrant Officer Veronica Uttak, Master Cpl. Susie Siusangnark, Master Cpl. Neevie Kidlapik, Master Cpl. Aaron Kopak, Cpl. Lorena Siusangnark and Cpl. Ernie Inaksajak.

The Naujaat cadets won the 2014 competition.

Team Nunavut tryout

Rankin Inlet

A tryout camp to select the Team Nunavut bantam hockey squad to compete at the 2016 Arctic Winter Games (AWG) was held in Rankin Inlet this past weekend.

The selection camp featured on-ice practice and instruction, two intra-squad games and two games pitting the AWG bantams against the Rankin Inlet midget players.

Players from a number of communities across Nunavut attended the event.

The final player selections were not known as of press time.
