Habitat store gets tax break
A Habitat For Humanity store near the solid waste facility that will sell construction material and large household items was given a tax exemption by city council Aug. 24.
The break saves the non-profit $2,348.52 based on 2015 tax rates. Coun. Niels Konge voted against the motion early on. However, on third reading he voted in favour. He wants a better system for organizations seeking tax breaks.

Lunch with St. Pat's new teachers
St. Patrick High School is hosting a meet-the-teacher barbecue tomorrow.
The new faces are Kim Nichols, who will teach leadership and resiliency, Garry Dormody, teaching French immersion; Morgan Gallagher, Christian Methot and Dave Coolen, all teaching Grade 9 science and biology; Amy Wilkinson, Grade 8 math and science; classroom assistants Nicole Hamm and Trena Heseltine; math teacher Jason Messier and food prep teacher Thomas McQuat. Those participating should gather at 6 p.m. in the rock area in the school.

New public school staff
Public schools welcoming new assistant principals include Sir John Franklin High School, J.H. Sissons School and Mildred Hall School. Paul Bennett, formerly principal at J.H. Sissons School, has moved over to Sir John Franklin, while Brigitte Rivet is the new vice-principal at J.H. Sissons School and Ryan Nichols is now the vice-principal at Mildred Hall School. Katey Simmons has taken over the top administrator job at Mildred Hall School.
Rachell Simmons is now the principal at J.H. Sissons School and Dean MacInnis is the new principal at the public district's high school. Jeff Seabrook is now the principal and Monique Marinier is now an administrative support staff member at William McDonald School.

Earth Rangers headed for William McDonald School
The Earth Rangers - a children's conservation organization based out of Woodbridge, Ont. - are visiting William McDonald Middle School on Sept. 10 at 9:45 a.m. The group enables children to protect animals, improve the environment and make a difference, according to their website.

Tootoo invited to summit
Iqaluit/Kivalliq
Jordin Tootoo has been officially called out.
The participants of the 10th National Inuit Youth Summit in Iqaluit this past month posted a video online on to social media thanking Tootoo for supplying a video to this year's event on Aug. 28. The youth also in the video officially invited Tootoo to be a participant at the 2017 National Inuit Youth Summit.
Festival time
Baker Lake
Something for all ages was offered during the community of Baker Lake's Festival By The Lake held in that community from Aug. 28 to 30.
Among the many activities featured at the festival were hot air balloon rides, a bouncy castle and slide, arts and crafts sale, the musical entertainment of Mr. Mark, face painting, an open-mic talent show, an Elvis impersonator and a fireworks display. Ball hockey tourney on tap
Arviat
The annual Arviat Ball Hockey Championship was slated to be held in Arviat from Aug. 28 to 30. At least eight teams were expected to compete in the event. Final results were not known as of press time.
Tradition program earns prize

The IlitaqsiniqNunavut Literacy Council received $20,000 as the top winner of the GreatWest Life, London Life and Canada Life Literacy Innovation Award this past week. The council's Miqqut program embeds literacy and essential skills into the development of traditional sewing skills in a learning environment where participants can use either Inuktitut or English for reading, writing and speaking.
Ilitaqsiniq Nunavut Literacy Council will share the details of its winning program in a national webinar for Canadian literacy practitioners, hosted by ABC Life Literacy

Chamber names interim head
Baker Lake/Kiavlliq
Glenn McLean of Baker Lake has been named as the interim president of the Kivalliq Chamber of Commerce.
Ellie Cansfield of Rankin Inlet tendered her resignation as council president during the chamber's annual general meeting on Aug. 21 in Rankin Inlet.
The chamber is expected to put out a public call seeking a qualified individual who may be interested in assuming the chamber presidency on a fulltime basis.
