Keyuajuk in custody, again
Jonah Keyuajuk, 44, is back in custody. The man police have called a "violent sexual offender" was arrested over the weekend for allegedly breaching conditions of his release, according to an RCMP news release. Keyuajuk was the subject of a public warning from police when he was released from prison in August.
Within 24 hours of his release, he was arrested and charged with breaching conditions. Last week he pleaded guilty to one of three charges. The other two were stayed. He was released Thursday but was back in custody Sunday evening.

Police seek bedroom intruder
Police are investigating a break-in and bedroom intrusion. According to a news release from RCMP, a Gitzel Street resident awoke around 5:20 a.m. Sunday to find an unknown man standing in their bedroom. The intruder fled the home when the resident turned on a light.
Police are searching for the man, who was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and dark jeans. RCMP say a suspect has not yet been identified.

SPCA changes draw date
The NWT SPCA has delayed the date for the draw of the 2WD 1500 Series Regular Cab Chrysler Ram. Nicole Spencer, president of the organization, explained over the weekend that the raffle draw date had initially been set for Sept. 19, however due to a lack of sales in tickets for the truck, the date was changed to Oct. 17 at the NWT SPCA.
Other donated prizes include return airfare from Yellowknife to Edmonton plus $300 spending cash, courtesy of First Air. The third prize is a dog quilt.

Partial power outage hits Yellowknife
The Yellowknife area experienced a partial power outage between 9:55 a.m. and 10:05 a.m Monday. Eileen Hendry, manager of performance and benchmarking with NWT Power Corporation, said the outage was the result of one of the diesel generators connected to the power system located at Frank Channel tripping off. The generator backfeeds onto the Yellowknife grid. Hendry added she wasn't sure what caused it.

Youth head to science camp
Baker Lake
Students from across the region took part in the annual Kivalliq Science Culture Camp on the land near Baker Lake earlier this month.
The camp, sponsored by the Kivalliq Science Educator's Community, ran from Sept. 9 to 14.
Highlights from the event included a tour of Agnico Eagle's Meadowbank Mine, firstaid training, rocksandminerals classes on the land, a GPS challenge, and experiential education that focused on learning to survive, cook, clean, camp and work together in a nontraditional school setting.

Ball hockey award winners
Arviat
The individual awards presented during the third annual Arviat Ball Hockey Championship saw Shane Kuksuk named Most Valuable Player, while Sukuluk Kaludjak was the tourney's Best Defenceman.
Justin Kuksuk was named the tournament's Best Goalie, while Patrick Beardsall of Rankin Inlet was named the Most Sportsmanlike Player.
The Bench Warmers, Legends, Mighty Mites, Fire Fighters and Arctic Storm competed at the event.
Raising dough with cookies
Rankin Inlet
Rankin Inlet was one of three Tim Hortons locations in Nunavut to take part in the launch of the Tim Hortons annual Smile Cookie fundraiser from Sept. 14 to 20.
Tim Hortons in Pond Inlet and Iqaluit also took part in the fundraiser.
The participating Tim Hortons restaurants at Northern and NorthMart stores will donate all proceeds from the sale of a special smiling chocolate chunk cookie to a local charity.
The $1 treat helps charities, hospitals and community programs across Canada in cities where they're sold.
Students win awards
Kivalliq
Listed below are the students who were presented with awards for their outstanding contributions during the annual Kivalliq Science Culture Camp on the land near Baker Lake earlier this month.
The leadership award recipient, awarded to the student who displays leadership throughout the camp, is Simone Bruce of Rankin Inlet.
The Master Chef award recipient, given to the student with the most willingness and dedication to cooking, is Tino Teenar of Whale Cove.
Whale Cove won first in the GPS Challenge, with Coral Harbour coming in second. Hunting and Fishing Award receipients are Phillip Okatsiak and John Tugak of Arviat and Ethel Ford of Ranking Inlet won the Tunnganarniq Award.

Hunters in Naujaat landed a bowhead whale earlier this month. Much of the meat from the successful harvest was shared among members of the community.
