Kieron Testart to run in Kam Lake
There will be at least two candidates running for MLA in Kam Lake for the Nov. 23 territorial election.
Kieron Testart announced on Monday that he will be running against incumbent David Ramsay. Testart is the campaign manager for Michael McLeod, the NWT Liberal candidate for the Oct. 19 federal election.
Testart took a leave from his position as policy analyst for the Department of Justice to run McLeod's campaign.

Julian Morse to run for council
Lifelong Northerner Julian Morse announced his candidacy for the next city council on Sunday. A regulatory officer for the Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Board, Morse moved to the city when he was six years old and completed a diploma in Environment and Natural Resources Technology at Aurora College in Fort Smith.
Morse has served on the Community Justice Committtee, the Folk on the Rocks board and president of the Somba K'e Paddling Club. He's also served as constituency assistant to Weledeh MLA Bob Bromley.

City to host Whitehorse business delegation
The City of Yellowknife announced Monday that a group of businesses and non-government organizations are visiting Oct. 1 and 2. The two-day public event will be hosted jointly by the Yukon government, Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce, GNWT and the municipality.
A reception hosted by the two municipalities will take place Oct. 1 from 6:30 p.m. to 9 at the Top Knight. A breakfast will follow at the Explorer Hotel at 8 a.m., Oct. 2.

Diamond mine expansion before board
Today the Mackenzie Valley Review Board was set to commence its third and final day of public hearings on Dominion Diamond Corporation's Jay Project - an expansion of the Ekati Diamond Mine. If approved, this project will keep the mine operating for another 10 years.
Government agencies, First Nations and members of the public asked questions and raised concerns about the project's potential environmental impact. Members of the public can share comments at 4:30 p.m. tonight at the Tree of Peace Friendship Centre.

Arena upgrade coming
Rankin Inlet
The grand old lady of Kivalliq hockey will be getting some much needed renovations during the next few upcoming months.
Funding has been approved which will see the space in the building's old public swimming pool converted into three brand-new dressing rooms.
The three existing dressing rooms will be converted to two larger dressing rooms, giving the arena a total of five.
The increased number and size of the dressing rooms will help the organizational aspects of the numerous hockey tournaments the community of Rankin Inlet holds every season immensely.
Rankin recreation co-ordinator David Clark said the hamlet, plus every hockey program in the community, contributed financially to the project, which should come in with a price tag of about $260,000.
Indspire winner announced
Baker Lake
Laura Arngna'naaq of Baker Lake was the only person from Nunavut to capture one of the 2016 Indspire Awards.
Arngna'naaq has been awarded with the Youth-Inuit award.
The awards will be presented during a gala celebration at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver, B.C., on Feb. 12.
The event will be broadcast at a later date on both Global TV and APTN.
Indspire is an indigenous-led registered charity which invests in the education of indigenous people for the long-term benefit of these individuals, their families, community and country.
Hockey camp dates announced
Rankin Inlet
Oct. 19 to 23 have been announced as the dates for the second annual season-opener hockey camp in Rankin Inlet.
As with the camp's inaugural year, this year will again blend literacy components and off-ice activities with on-ice instruction.
The literacy portion will be less than in 2014, due to the lack of literacy funding available this year.

Stephanie Aulatjut of Arviat has been accepted onto the National Youth Advisory Committee for the Canadian Commission for UNESCO.
Aulatjut's acceptance marks the first time Nunavut has been included as a member of the Canadian Commission's UNESCO's National Youth Advisory Committee.

The new Rental Housing Ixdex released this past week shows Nunavut has the highest proportion of renters of any province or territory in Canada at 79 per cent (6,845 renter households).
The study also showed more than 40 per cent of all renter households in Canada are spending more than 30 per cent of their gross income on rent alone, with one-in-five renter households being at a crisis level of spending by spending more than 50 per cent of their gross income on rent.
