Jeffrey was found unresponsive in his cell in the medium-security unit at the jail. Staff performed CPR but he could not be revived. He was 34.

Naglingniq was found in her mother's apartment Dec. 6, 2002 with multiple stab wounds. Jeffrey lied to police, Nunavut News/North reported at the time, as another man was charged with the murder and held for about a week before being released.

Jeffrey told police he had an alibi, which fell apart after his mother pressed him on the issue, at which point he admitted he had been present during the murder. At that point, he claimed the girl's mother stabbed her to death.

That claim was also demolished the following March, when a blood sample matched blood found at the scene of the crime.

Charged with first-degree murder, Jeffrey pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in 2007, in exchange for a lesser sentence.

He was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 14 years before he was eligible for parole.
