Bob Brooks resigned his council seat Monday night as he is taking on a new job with the territorial government.

His resignation, effective after council met, capped seven terms in office.

"It's both a sad and happy occasion for me," Brooks said during a statement at the start of the meeting followed by a standing ovation from council and staff.

He said he was proudest of the work to get the Fieldhouse built and Northland Trailer Park water and sewer infrastructure replaced.

On Monday, he finished work with the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment and on Tuesday he began his new job as director of community governance with the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs.

He said it's a move that allows him to use his experience on council in the workplace.

"I'm really looking forward to the challenge and it's definitely going to be an end of an era for me, my family and for city residents - they may not hear me in the news every week if I stay out of trouble."

The former councillor had previously said he won't run in the next municipal election but the resignation sped his departure from the council chamber.

Asked why he had to resign, he said no one can hold a director level job in the GNWT and also serve as a mayor or councillor.

His colleagues on council applauded his dedication to the city over the years.

"You will be sorely, sorely missed," said Mayor Mark Heyck.

Coun. Cory Vanthuyne described Brooks as a "voice of reason" who always makes decisions for the greater good of the community.

A byelection is not needed to fill his seat because of the upcoming fall election.
