Canada Day celebrations will kick off this morning with a parade through downtown followed by festivities through the afternoon at Somba K'e Civic Plaza.

The Rotary Club of Yellowknife's annual parade will leave the Yellowknife Community Arena at 11 a.m., head down 50 Avenue and turn right onto 48 Street to end at Sir John Franklin High School.

Chair of the Canada Day parade committee Ted McLeod said they anticipate about 100 entries to the parade.

McLeod described the floats as "a little bit of everything."

"It's going to be an interesting parade," he said.

The city's Canada Day celebrations will kick off at noon today at Somba K'e Civic Plaza and run until 3:30 p.m.

Festivities include kids crafts, magicians, face painting, a belly-dance performance, bouncy castles, musical entertainment and speeches from Mayor Mark Heyck, Premier Bob McLeod and NWT MP Dennis Bevington.

Entertainment and activities will be put on by Bella Dance, the Taoist Tai Chi Society, the Bush Chords, Cirque Grandiose, Frozen Fingered Magicians, NWT Literacy Council and others.

As well, the Yellowknife Farmer's Market will be set up at the plaza to offer the usual selection of tasty treats.

If it rains, the city's celebration will move to the Shorty Brown Arena at the Multiplex.
