Police seek owner of adrift dock

RCMP are seeking the owner of a large dock found adrift in Back Bay mid-June. The piece of equipment caused headaches for area boaters as it floated freely creating an obstacle. The dock has since been recovered by the Canadian Coast Guard. Anyone with information on the owner is asked to contact Yellowknife RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

Tootoo awarded new Polar Medal

Rankin Inlet

Second Lieutenant Dorothy Tootoo received a newly created national honour, the Polar Medal, July 8 in Whitehorse.

"The recipients who will be honoured with the Polar Medal have helped us to better connect with Canada's North and have inspired us through their diverse contributions and efforts," stated Gov. Gen. David Johnston in a news release in advance of the ceremony. "They have made this integral part of our country stronger and have reinforced the resilience of its communities. It will give me great pleasure to celebrate their achievements in Whitehorse, a city rife with potential."

Tootoo was one of 10 recipients.

Tootoo is the officer responsible for sustaining the cadet program in Rankin Inlet.

She received the award because in "demonstrating unwavering commitment to the program, she has enlisted the support of elders within the community to establish a mentoring program. In addition, as the residence manager at Arctic College, she seeks out every opportunity to help students persist in their studies and achieve their goals."

New wildlife regulations come into force

Nunavut

New Government of Nunavut wildlife regulations came into effect July 1.

Developed in with Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. (NTI) and the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board, the new regulations are in compliance with the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement.

"We are implementing these regulations to uphold Inuit harvesting rights," said Environment Minister Johnny Mike. "These new regulations are largely deregulatory and will remove a number of unnecessary provisions left over from the previous Wildlife Act adopted from the Northwest Territories. Today marks an important milestone for wildlife management in Nunavut."

NTI vice president James Eetoolook said "The implementation of the regulations empowers Inuit and incorporates the traditional customs and practices of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit in the official laws of the new Nunavut Wildlife Act."

In the new regulations, changes were made to the wildlife management system in Nunavut, including new reporting requirements for wildlife related businesses, licence requirements for companies involved in wildlife viewing or filmmaking, and changes in fees for those people who require licences.

The regulations are available on the GN's Department of Environment website.
