Now that she's finished Grade 2 at Mezi Community School in Whati, she's already begun getting ready for Grade 3.

"This time it's going to be harder," she said.

"I'm going to practice to go in Grade 3."

Wetrade's mother, Jessica, said Wetrade has always been one to prepare, especially when it comes to school.

"When she was in preschool she was getting ready for kindergarten," Jessica said.

Since summer vacation began, Wetrade has been keeping up with her schoolwork, especially her favourite subjects - math and reading.

"She's been reading a lot at home when she's just staying in," Jessica said. "She's getting ready, doing math tables and reading a lot."

She is a girl who enjoys a challenge.

"Math is my favourite subject because it's hard," she said.

Wetrade also stepped up to help a new student who arrived at Mezi Community School last year, she said. She made sure to include the new student during recess and ensured she felt welcomed into the community.

"That's an important thing to do," Wetrade said. "When I first met her, I became friends with her. I played with her."

In addition to her schoolwork, Wetrade often volunteered to sing Oh Canada and lead the morning prayer before classes began each day.

"It's my favourite thing in the morning," she said.

For the first time this year, Wetrade has been keeping a journal. She said she records everything from what to do when dealing with bullies to what she did on her Christmas vacation.

She said of all the subjects she writes about, she enjoyed describing her time off the best.

"I just love Christmas Day and holidays and weekends," she said.

Wetrade said she's been making the most of her summer vacation. She's been spending her days playing outside and visiting friends, as well as spending time with family. In fact, her family is planning to go boating and fishing the week of July 7.

"I love to go boating," she said.

"I'm going to try to catch a trout."

On days when Wetrade stays home, she said she spends her time playing with Lego, doing puzzles or drawing.

"I draw butterflies, rainbows, birds, people, dogs, cats or rats or mice," she said.

"I draw a cat chasing a rat and a dog chasing cats."

Though Grade 3 is still a few weeks away, Wetrade said she is looking forward to the new responsibilities being in a higher grade will bring.

"All we're going to do is just do work," she said.
