It's not often a story becomes a movie before it is even published, but that's happening to Hickey Gone Wrong, a humourous story by Richard Van Camp.

"It was originally inspired because I used to pump gas at Kelly's gas station, and one day one of our co-workers showed up with a hickey and he was quite embarrassed," the writer recalled.

"So I just never forgot that whole scenario of him trying to pump gas and hide his neck."

The movie, which will be less than 20 minutes in length, is part of the Youth Rise Project, which includes filmmaking, at Uncle Gabe's Friendship Centre in Fort Smith.

Van Camp said it will be a chance for youth to work with instructors on costumes, makeup, set design, lighting and sound and instructors are expected to write the script.

"Most importantly, this is a chance for Fort Smithers to have a good laugh and see Fort Smithers on the big screen," said Van Camp.

The plan is to shoot Hickey Gone Wrong on Aug. 10 and 11 in Fort Smith.

"This is gonzo filmmaking at its very best," said Van Camp.

The story originated when he was approached to submit to a comic book anthology, a project that is at a standstill.

Van Camp said he showed the comic book to Fort Smith filmmaker Carla Ulrich, who is co-ordinator of the Youth Rise Project, and she thought it would be perfect for youth to film this summer.

Among the characters are two teen males, a hysterical mom and people driving through the gas station and offering advice on what the best home remedies are for covering up hickeys.

"Hickey Gone Wrong is all about the celebration of community, sensuality, sexuality and fun," said Van Camp.
