Man retains jury trial right

Judge Karan Shaner ruled on Friday morning that a man charged with sexual assault had a legitimate reason for missing the first day of his trial and therefore has not forfeited his right to a jury trial. The reasons for Ken Kendi's absence from court on May 25 are under a publication ban. Kendi was re-arrested for missing court but has now been granted bail. He is to be back in court on Sept. 14.

Fire situation stable

Rain and cooler temperatures have slowed down the territory's 55 fires - for now. To date, little more than 100,000 hectares has been torched, according to fire manager Rick Olsen. The Deh Cho has the most fires at 21, followed by the South Slave with 14. The fire blazing closest to Yellowknife is now under control and back to the monitoring stage.

However, Olsen said this is only a short term reprieve as conditions are expected to dry up midweek with a chance of lightning over the weekend.

Boil advisory continues

A boil water advisory continues for residents of the city, Ndilo and Dettah. The advisory began May 11 as a precautionary measure because of increased dirt in the water supply from the Yellowknife River, which reduces the effectiveness of chlorine used to treat the water. The city's water treatment plant is expected to begin operating in mid-June.

Masks being recalled

Kivalliq

Parents of minor hockey goalies across the Kivalliq are advised that three goaltender masks and cages have been jointly recalled by Health Canada, the United States Product Safety Commission and the Bauer Hockey Corp.

The products recalled are the Bauer Concept C1 goalie mask with certified titanium oval wire, the Bauer NME goalie mask with certified titanium oval wire and the Bauer RP NME Ti titanium cage.

Bauer has determined there may be a quality issue with some of the titanium wire used in the manufacture of the cages, which may cause the wire to break or bend inward when struck by the puck.

About 1,300 of the cages were sold in Canada between April of 2013 and February of 2015.

Anyone who has purchased one of these items should stop its use immediately and contact the Bauer Corp. for a replacement cage and complimentary throat protector.
