Six Nunavummiut were charged May 16 as part of a May long weekend national impairment driving enforcement day effort.
Officers in communities across the territory conducted sobriety checkpoints. They stopped more than 400 vehicles.
"Five individuals were charged criminally for impaired operation of a vehicle by alcohol and one person was charged for impaired operation of a vehicle by drugs," stated Sgt. Yvonne Niego in a news release. "Additionally, seven drivers had their licences suspended for a 24-hour period."
The RCMP reminds motorists that keeping Nunavut's roads safe is everyone's responsibility.
"Enforcement is only one tool used to achieve this goal. Everyone can play a role in saving lives by choosing not to drive while impaired and ensuring that people around you do the same."
