Gun call in Range Lake

A male was taken into custody and a gun was seized after RCMP responded to a firearms call yesterday morning on Kasteel Drive in the Range Lake area.

According to a news release, officers, including the RCMP emergency response team, found a male in a bushy area, behind a residence, armed with a gun.

The gun, which was not described by police, was seized and the male was taken into custody without incident. No charges are pending as the investigation continues.

Boil advisory continues

A boil water advisory that began Monday remained in place for the city, Dettah and Ndilo as of press deadline Thursday.

The turbidity level, which looks at the clarity of water, had not dropped enough to end the precautionary measure Thursday morning.

Water used for preparing and washing food, brushing teeth and drinking should be boiled at least one minute prior to use.

The Department of Health and Social Services and the city will post online when the advisory ends.

Charge reduced in Legion theft

A charge of theft over $5,000 against a former Legion bartender was reduced to theft under $5,000 in court on Tuesday.

Mary Charles, 42, is to go to trial on the new charge on Oct. 7 in Supreme Court in front of a judge and jury.

The Crown prosecutor said outside court that evidence no longer supports the theft over $5,000 charge.

Free dumping in Fort Simpson for month

Fort Simpson has waived tipping fees for residential garbage at the dump for the month of May.

The idea originated with deputy mayor Stella Nadia, who said some people would be out of town during the large item pick-up days and she didn't want to see their garbage sit around all year because of that.

"There are a lot of eyesores around town," said Nadia at the last council meeting.

With the community cleanup earlier this month, she wanted Fort Simpson to get as full a spring cleaning as possible.

Councillors voted in favour of the motion to waive tipping fees for residential garbage during May.

DFN voice opposition to fracking

First Nation leaders from the Dehcho territory have committed to a fracking ban on traditional lands.

They met at a leadership meeting in Fort Simpson earlier this month and passed a resolution saying fracking will not be permitted anywhere within 215,000 square-kilometres of the Dehcho.

The resolution claims the GNWT never sought Dehcho First Nations consent when drafting its hydraulic fracturing regulations.

"Our people feel very strongly about this issue," stated Grand Chief Herb Norwegian in a news release.

"The GNWT needs to respect the wishes of our people and respect the laws of the Dehcho."

Career fair to be held at Deh Gah School

Fort Providence is hosting a career fair on May 20 at Deh Gah School.

Education, Culture and Employment and the Zahti Koe Friendship Centre are teaming up to run the fair, which starts at 1 p.m. and lasts until 8 p.m.

Deh Cho Bridge toll increases this week

As of Friday, May 15, the Deh Cho Bridge tolls will be increasing by 1.9 per cent.

The increase is in accordance with the consumer price index.

A new tolling class of nine or more axles will also be added.

Commercial vehicles with toll permits will face charges of $95 to $392 depending on number of axles, excluding pick-up trucks and buses.

Man injured in rollover

One person was taken to Edmonton for medical treatment following a rollover accident May 7.

RCMP Const. Elenore Sturko stated in a news release officers from the Inuvik RCMP detachment were called to a collision in the early morning May 7.

"The vehicle rolled and the driver, who was not wearing a seat belt was, injured. He was medevaced to Edmonton for treatment of his injuries. Speed is considered to be a contributing factor in the incident," she said in an interview.

The car may have hit speeds of up to 180 km/h, Sturko said in an interview. The driver has not been identified.

Former teacher jailed

A former Inuvik teacher has been sentenced to more than two years in jail for indecently assaulting a then 13-year-old male student during his time working in Inuvik in the 1970s.

David Button has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison.

He was convicted in March following a trial wherein the victim said Button assaulted him during a driving lesson.

The Crown had asked for a comparable sentence, arguing that Button had shown no remorse for his crime.

Button was also placed on a firearms prohibition for 10 years and he is being added to Canada's sex offender registry.

Self-defence course offered

The Inuvik Justice Committee is sponsoring a women's self-defence class on May 15.

The class is free for women from 12 years of age and older. It will focus on how to identify when a situation is escalating and to identify and create avenues for escape.

Ten spots are available, and women of all athletic abilities are encouraged to attend.

The class will held at East Three Secondary School from 6 to 10 p.m.

Spring cleaning time

Inuvik officials are gearing up for the annual spring clean-up with a variety of activities.

From May 25 until June 8, the town is offering free tipping fees at the waste disposal site for residential, commercial and industrial users, with the exception of demolition and hazardous materials.

On May 26, 27 and 28, the public works department will offer free pickup for large residential items.

The town is also looking for entries into its annual beautification contest, which will be judged during the first week of August.

As well, the town is looking for volunteer groups and organizations to sign up for the annual garbage clean-up. There are 13 zones open to volunteers, who will receive funding from the town for their efforts.

The clean-up begins June 5 and ends June 12.
