Impaired joyrider gets four more months

A woman convicted of stealing a pick-up truck while impaired and smashing it into another vehicle being driven by a pregnant woman will serve four more months in jail.

Felicia Pierrot, 31, was sentenced by Judge Christine Gagnon in court last Friday. She pleaded guilty to stealing the truck last November and crashing it downtown. Pierrot is also banned from driving for five years and has been ordered to pay the victim $1,835 in restitution.

Mine reclamation to include blasting

To reduce the risk of water from Baker Creek entering the Giant Mine site, work to stabilize one of the pits at the mine site is underway, requiring blasting.

The Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development alerted the public on Monday that blasting would take place on the site to access gravel used for reinforcing the C1 pit on the mine site.

Sex assault investigated

A person is in custody as RCMP investigate a sexual assault in the city.

RCMP stated in a news release a 22-year-old woman was taken to Stanton Territorial Hospital and has been in touch with police. The information available indicates the alleged assault "occurred within an unknown time frame" and the location has yet to be determined, the Mounties stated. RCMP does not believe public safety is at risk at this time. No charges have been laid and the investigation continues.

New principal appointed at public high school

Dean MacInnis has been appointed to take the reigns as principal of Sir John Franklin High School, replacing Edward Lippert.

Lippert has been appointed as the new assistant superintendent for Yellowknife Education District 1 (Yk1). MacInniss has taught in classrooms and as a gym teacher, worked as an administrator at William McDonald School from 2003 to 2007 and at Range Lake North School from 2007 to 2010 before taking up the vice-principal job at Sir John Franklin in 2011.

Minister resigns

Rankin Inlet

Rankin Inlet North and Chesterfield Inlet MLA Tom Sammurtok resigned as a cabinet minister during a caucus meeting in Iqaluit this past Wednesday, May 6.

Sammurtok had been a minister without portfolio since being stripped of Community and Government Services following a charge of drunk driving laid against him this past month.

Sammurtok will remain as the Rankin Inlet NorthChesterfield Inlet MLA.

It is expected the cabinet will stay at eight members, at least until the midterm leadership review this coming fall.

New machines for hunters

Coral Harbour

Seven hunters who lost their machines when they and another man had to be rescued from an ice floe about 55 km outside of Coral Harbour this past January have received new snowmobiles, courtesy of the Government of Nunavut.

The machines were chartered into Coral earlier this month.

The eight men who were rescued after spending two days on the edge floe estimate they lost about $100,000 worth of equipment in the ordeal.

Dog race

Baker Lake

Baker Lake is scheduled to host the annual Qamanittuaq Development Corp.'s annual dogsled race from May 11 to 13.

Each team may only run four dogs in the race, which covers about 10 to 12 miles per day.

Each musher must sponsor an elder in the race, with the final leg set to go tonight, May 13, at 6:30 p.m.

Snowmobiles race

Chesterfield Inlet

Chesterfield Inlet was scheduled to host its annual CrossCountry Challenge snowmobile race this past weekend.

Final results were not known as of press time.

Fishing derby time

Rankin Inlet

Rankin Inlet has announced its annual fishing derby will be held from May 15 to 18.

This year's event has a 50mile boundary.

Top prizes ranging from $4,000 for first place to $300 for 10th place will be awarded to the top catch for both cod and trout.

There is no entrance fee.

Measuring will take place on Tuesday, May 19, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in front of the recreation hall.

Rec co-ordinator leaves league

Rankin Inlet

Rankin Inlet rec coordinator David Clark has announced he is stepping down as a member of the executive for the Rankin Inlet Senior Men's Hockey League.

Clark has served on the league's executive board for past 12 years.

He intends to focus more time on his role as a coach with the Rankin Inlet Minor Hockey Association.

Soccer tourney

Rankin Inlet

The community of Rankin Inlet is scheduled to hold its fourth annual Rankin Adult Soccer Tournament from May 28 to 31.

Organizers are currently looking for people to serve as supervisors and janitors during the event.
