Man charged with aggravated assault

A man is charged with four counts of aggravated assault after an incident April 22 at a downtown shopping mall.

According to an RCMP news release, officers were dispatched to the mall after receiving a report that four people had been assaulted with a weapon.

Police stated that all four victims were taken to Stanton Territorial Hospital as a precaution.

It is unknown how seriously the victims were hurt or what kind of weapon was used.

Victor Ugyuk, 28, of Yellowknife was held for court this past Monday.

Ex-Legion bartender in court

A former bartender at the Legion in Yellowknife charged with theft has elected to be tried in NWT Supreme Court in front of a judge and jury.

Mary Charles, 42, appeared in court yesterday.

She will also have a preliminary hearing to determine whether there is enough evidence to send the case to trial.

Charles was charged in February after more than $60,000 in cash and alcohol allegedly went missing from the Legion.

She has yet to officially enter a plea.

Suspicious package investigation continues

RCMP continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a suspicious package that led to an evacuation at the Yellowknife courthouse last Thursday.

RCMP stated in a news release the package will be sent for analysis.

They have not said what they think was in it.

City seeks 50/50 lot opinions

The city will hold several public engagement sessions to get opinions on what to do with the city-owned lots at the corner of 50/50 and on 50 Street.

The informal drop-in sessions at Centre Square Mall (upper mall) will be May 12 from noon to 9:30 p.m., and May 13 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Workshops, lasting 2.5 hours, will be held on May 12 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., and May 13 at 8 a.m.

School celebrates Earth Day

Repulse Bay

Tusarvik School held an afternoon of outdoor activities to mark Earth Day in Repulse Bay on April 22.

The students took part in a variety of activities ranging from iglu building to sliding, big ball soccer, ringette, parachute games, ice fishing and bocce ball.

Guilty verdict in manslaughter case

Rankin Inlet/Iqaluit

Colin Makpah, 30, was found guilty of manslaughter for the 2010 Rankin Inlet stabbing death of 23yearold Donald James (D.J.) Gamble in an Iqaluit courtroom this past week.

Justice Neil Sharkey delivered the verdict in the Nunavut Court of Justice on April 21.

Makpah, who has been out on bail, admitted to stabbing Gamble during a fight. He had pleaded not guilty and claimed the stabbing was done in selfdefence.

Gamble was stabbed several times following an altercation that began at a party.

He was transported to the Kivalliq Regional Health Centre, where he succumbed to his wounds while health centre staff tried to stabilize him.

Makpah will remain out on bail until his sentencing on a still to be specified date.

Volleyball time

Rankin Inlet

A total of 19 teams in two divisions competed for the Laura Gauthier Memorial volleyball championship in Rankin Inlet this past weekend.

The event featured 11 female and eight male teams.

In addition to host Rankin, teams from Iglulik, Pond Inlet, Gjoa Haven, Iqaluit, Repulse Bay and Whale Cove competed at the event.

The event marked the first time Iglulik sent both a male and female team to the tournament.

Final results were not known at press time.

Career fair

Arviat

A career fair will be held at the community hall in Arviat tomorrow, April 30.

The event is sponsored by Family Services and will feature numerous presenters to provide career information and answer any questions those attending may have.

Busy in Baker

Baker Lake

It's been a busy, active and healthy time for both youths and adults alike in Baker Lake recently.

Students and staff at Rachel Arngnammaktiq Elementary School raised $1,860 during its annual Jump Rope for Heart event.

The kindergartentoGrade 5 school has raised more than $36,000 with the event during the past 13 years.

More than 40 players participated in the community basketball tournament, Qamani'tuaq Open, earlier this month.

Play was featured in both male and female divisions, with brackets of U14, U15, U16, U19 and adult open.

Finally, the Baker Lake Youth Athletic Association will host its annual athletic banquet this coming month to celebrate another successful year of sport in Baker.

Fishing derby next month

Arviat

The annual trout and Northern pike fishing derby will be held in Arviat from May 15 to 18.

The top10 fishers in each category will bring home cash prizes, with a grand prize of $6,000 up for grabs for both the biggest trout and Northern pike landed during the derby.

Music Monday

Rankin Inlet

Maani Ulujuk Ilinniarvik will join the rest of the nation to celebrate Music Monday on May 4.

The event will see students and community members come together to celebrate music education for the afternoon with a number of live performances. The event has been tentatively slated to begin between 1:30 and 2 p.m.
