Attempted robbery investigation

Two persons are at large after an attempted robbery at the Shell gas station on Range Lake Road.

A news release from the RCMP stated early Wednesday morning the suspects entered the convenience store and one assaulted an employee with pepper spray before jumping over the counter. Nothing was taken but the suspects had fled before RCMP arrived on the scene.

YCS apologizes for 'inappropriate' post

Yellowknife Catholic Schools has apologized for comments one of its employees made about Tlicho hunters last month.

David Radcliffe was the district's aboriginal program activities co-ordinator when he wrote on Facebook that the caribou hunters were "animals."

The apology came in a news release Thursday and in letters sent April 21 from YCS board chairman Simon Taylor to Dene national chief Bill Erasmus and Tlicho executive officer Laura Duncan.

The letters state the board took "immediate, appropriate action" but does not specify what that action was.

Radcliffe no longer appears on the YCS online staff list under the co-ordinator title.

Search successful

Police are releasing few details about why they responded to the Frame Lake area early Thursday morning with the Yellowknife Search and Rescue Association, RCMP Police Dog Services and a helicopter. The person was located before 9 a.m. and taken to Stanton Territorial Hospital.

RCMP Const. Elenore Sturko stated police were called to assist in the search for a person in distress because "of an undisclosed situation."

Fort Simpson businesses broken into

Two businesses were broken into earlier this month in Fort Simpson and the RCMP are looking for any information that can help lead to an arrest.

Between April 2 and April 7, two businesses were broken into by an unknown number of suspects and a number of items were stolen.

One business reported the theft of four Husqvarna chainsaws and accessories, while the other reported the theft of a Dewalt toolbox and drill bits.

Police believe that both incidents happened during the same period of time and witnesses are urged to contact the Fort Simpson RCMP detachment with any information.

Fuel costs drop

Two communities in the Deh Cho region have seen a drop in gas, diesel and home heating fuel costs since the territorial government was able to purchase fuel at lower prices.

Both Trout Lake and Nahanni Butte will pay less for petroleum products. Trout Lake will pay nine cents less for heating fuel, 19 cents less for diesel and 12 cents less for gasoline, dropping the price from $1.74 to $1.62.

Nahanni Butte residents will see a smaller drop in cost for heating fuel from $1.64 to $1.61, a three cent drop, and a drop in diesel from $1.86 to $1.75.

The communities are fuelled by the Petroleum Products Program through Public Works and Services.

Biathletes visit Bompas

Two of Canada's top biathletes will visit Bompas Elementary School and Thomas Simpson School on April 22 and 23 to share their stories with students.

Olympian Brendan Green, originally from Hay River, and his girlfriend, Alberta's Rosanna Crawford, will speak to students at both schools about their rise through the ranks from the bottom of the international standings to podium contenders. The visit to Fort Simpson is the third and final stop on a three-community tour that took the pair to Inuvik and Fort McPherson earlier in the week.

See next week's Deh Cho Drum for more on the visit.

Public meeting in Liard

The territorial government will be hosting a public meeting in Fort Liard on April 23.

The meeting will be hosted by the standing committee on social programs to review two bills that will amend two government acts.

Bill 44 will make amendments to the Hospital Insurance and Health and Social Services Administration Act, and Bill 47 will make changes to the Child and Family Services Act.

Fiscal shape up

It looks like membership rates at the Midnight Sun Recreation Complex Fitness Centre are increasing.

Inuvik council members were to vote on the increase to the rates at the April 22 meeting.

The proposed new rates were to be discussed at the April 20 committee of the whole meeting, but it was cancelled due to a lack of quorum.

Yearly memberships would increase to $450 from the current $350. Quarterly memberships would rise to $125 from $100. Monthly and weekly memberships would also rise $10 to $50 and $30 respectively.

Daily passes would increase to $7 from $5.

All rates include a $20 card deposit, other than corporate memberships.

The fees have not been increased since 2003, a report to council states.

In the last two years, the town's community services department has spent $50,000 on upgrading the centre.

Imperial Oil hosting meeting

Imperial Oil representatives plan to hold a public meeting on their plans for offshore drilling north of Tuktoyaktuk on April 23.

"These sessions are part of our ongoing consultation with communities in the ISR. They are meant to help us keep the communities informed about the status of our exploration plans and activities, and to get their feedback and questions, something we’ve been doing since the offshore licenses were acquired in 2007 and 2008," stated senior media advisor Pius Rolheiser in an e-mail.

There will be no formal agenda for the meeting, which will be held at Ingamo Hall starting at 5:30 p.m.

New course offered

The Aurora campus is offering a two-month course on early learning and childcare.

The program is aimed at anyone interested in pursuing childcare as a career, whether it be in a childcare centre, head start program, day home or something similar.

The course will focus on child development, safety, nutrition and record keeping.

It will run from May 4 to June 19.

Road watch begins

With the weather turning unseasonably warm, the watch is on to determine how long the ice roads to Aklavik and Tuktoyaktuk will last.

The ice road at Inuvik was still in use but had turned to a soupy mess by April 20. That prompted a warning about slippery conditions for motorists.

The NWT Department of Transportation is warning of potentially difficult conditions otherwise, including overflows.

The road closed in late April in 2014, and during the first week of May in 2013.
