Major deficiencies found in correctional services in NWT

Program support for inmates with mental health and addictions is a major concern the Auditor General of Canada highlighted in a report on correctional services in the NWT.

The report, released yesterday, looks at whether the Department of Justice is meeting the requirements of the Corrections Act in its treatment of inmates. In addition to programming, the report listed various deficiencies including the management of facilities, segregation of inmates and security.

The report issued 14 recommendations which the department has agreed to in whole.

RCMP evacuate high school after bomb threat

No device was found after a bomb threat was called in yesterday at Sir John Franklin School.

Members of the Yellowknife RCMP Crime Reduction Unit, the General Investigation Section, and the NWT RCMP Emergency Response Team attended. Students and staff were taken to St. Patrick School.

Arrests made in taxi robbery

A male and female have been charged after a taxi driver was assaulted and money was stolen Feb. 25. Karma Eeyeevadluk, 18, has been charged with robbery and failing to comply with court imposed conditions and Bradley King, 20, has been charged with failing to comply with court imposed conditions.

RCMP are still seeking a third suspect, Denecho King, 22, described as 5'2" with black hair and brown eyes. Anyone with information about his whereabouts should contact police.

UNW to buy parcel next to park

The Union of Northern Workers (UNW) is poised to buy a parcel of green space between its building and on 53rd Street.

Patty Ducharme, director of finance and administration for UNW said the union wants a clear green space adjacent to its building.

Jeff Humble, director of planning and development for the city, said the property is zoned parks and recreation.

Kivalliq team heads to Challenge Cup

Kivalliq/Iqaluit

The Kivalliq Canucks travelled to Iqaluit to take on Team Baffin in the annual Challenge Cup junior C championship this past weekend.

The bestofthree series decides which team will represent Nunavut at the annual MaritimeHockey North junior C championship in Sherwood, P.E.I., from March 25 to 29.

Final results from Iqaluit were not known as of press time.

Awards presented

Naujaat's Piita (Peter) Irniq (Culture, Heritage & Spirituality) and Arviat's Jordan Konek (Inuit Youth) picked up their 2015 Indspire Awards in Calgary, Alta., this past Friday, Feb. 27.

Irniq and Konek were among 14 First Nation, Inuit and Metis individuals from across the country honoured at the 2015 Indspire Awards gala at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium.

Rankin Inlet

Volleyball Nunavut has announced it will be hosting a novice, level one refresher official's course in Rankin Inlet on March 21 and 22.

The course fee is $150 and includes a Volleyball Canada official's shirt and sanctioning cards, official's whistle and rule manual.

A maximum 10 officials will be accepted for the clinic.

Kivalliq officials, or wouldbe officials, outside of Rankin can apply to Volleyball Nunavut to have their flight and accommodation provided.

Deadline to apply to Volleyball Nunavut for the Rankin clinic is March 9.

Ladies hit the ice

Five teams are currently scheduled to compete in this coming weekend's Young At Heart female hockey tournament.

The games get underway on Friday, March, 6, with

the championship game being played on Sunday, March 8.

Cadets fundraise for trip

Repulse Bay

The Repulse Bay cadets held a penny sale this past Saturday, Feb. 28, at Tusarvik School.

The event was part of the cadets' continuing fundraising efforts to send four Repulse cadets to Europe this coming May to join in the 70th anniversary VE Day (Victory in Europe) celebrations to mark Nazi Germany's surrender to the Allies.
