IQALUIT
Iqaluit voters will have their say April 20 about whether they want a beer and wine store in the capital. Elections Nunavut announced the non-binding plebiscite March 20.

The question will be: "Are you in favour of a beer and wine store opening in the City of Iqaluit?"

The plebiscite is intended to give the territorial cabinet a feel for whether people want a store or not. Even if a vote is close to a tie, cabinet will have the final say in whether it is in the city's and territory's best interest to open a store.

"If the vote is really close, I don't think anybody would want us to be bound one way or another to having to follow this particular plebiscite," Department of Finance deputy minister Chris D'Arcy said last month.

Any Canadian 18 and older who lives in Iqaluit and has lived in Nunavut for the 12 months prior to April 20 can vote. Anyone not on the voters' list can register or make address updates at the returning office, building 607, from 12 to 7 p.m. daily.

Advance polls will be held April 13 to 17. Voters with mobility issues can take advantage of a mobile poll April 13.
