Man charged after drug raid

A B.C. man faces several charges after RCMP executed a search warrant at an apartment on Range Lake Road on Tuesday night. Police seized approximately 2.4 kilograms of marijuana, a small amount of cocaine, a significant amount of cash, trafficking paraphernalia and brass knuckles, according to a news release. Jesse William Coburn, 29, of Nanaimo is charged with possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking, possession of cocaine, possession of proceeds of crime and possession of a prohibited weapon. He is to appear in court today.

Alleged taxi robber in court

A man charged with robbing a cab driver on Latham Island last month made a brief court appearance on Monday. Denecho King, 22, was remanded in custody until his next court appearance today. He is one of three people charged in connection with the robbery.

Cause of Glick Court fire undetermined

The official cause of a house fire on Feb. 20 on Glick Court that gutted a home is now listed as undetermined. Chucker Dewar, the NWT fire marshal said the fire is not suspicious and that because of the amount of damage the fire was difficult to investigate, he suspects the fire started in the chimney system.

Artists wanted to add colour to city

The city is calling for submissions for street banner art in Old Town and downtown. Submissions must be of works already created and not newly made for this project. Artwork that would display well in a long, narrow format is desired. In total there will be 70 banners incorporating five to seven images. Artists whose work is selected will be paid a $500 honorarium per image. The deadline is March 20.

Porsches turn heads

A fleet of Porsches were travelling through the Deh Cho region last weekend to test the high-end vehicles in cold and snowy conditions.

Heads turned in Fort Simpson as residents spotted up to 10 of the vehicles during an overnight pit stop, including at the Northern store fuel pumps. The vehicles were only in the village for a short while before being driven on to Yellowknife.

Walk to Tuk prize winner

Darlene Douglas of Fort Simpson was one of several prize winners drawn after the completion of the Walk to Tuk.

Douglas, a member of the Healthy Gliders Team, won a First Air flight pass during the March 3 draw according to a news release.

The Walk to Tuk had 188 registered teams this year. Participants log their exercise, as a team, walk 1,685 kilometres – the equivalent distance down Mackenzie River to Tuktoyaktuk.

There were five teams from the village and Fort Providence and one from Fort Liard.

Participants across the territory walked an average of 316 minutes per week according to the release, above the recommended 150 minutes in the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines.

RCMP issue online safety reminder

The RCMP issued a statement reminding Internet users to keep themselves secure online.

The warning comes after a sports website was "hacked," the statement says. Users are encouraged to not use the same password across multiple website, to have a firewall, have updated anti-virus software and to avoid questionable e-mails.

Const. Elenore Sturko said RCMP take cyber crime seriously and encouraged anyone suspecting computer crime, identity theft or fraud to contact police.

Education council meets in Fort Providence

The Dehcho District Education Council is holding meetings in Fort Providence this week to discuss a draft budget and policies.

The council was expected to meet in the hamlet over three days starting March 11.

In addition to the draft budget, two days of training were planned.

Bompas book fair

Parents looking to grow their library will have the chance March 12 when Bompas Elementary School in Fort Simpson hosts a book fair.

The event will be taking place in the gym.

There are no regular classes that day because of student-led conferences.

Few details on sudden death

The RCMP detachment and the coroner’s office are investigating the sudden death of a young woman in apartments owned by the MacKenzie Hotel at the intersection of Mackenzie Road and Tununuk Place.

So far, few details have been released on the incident. The RCMP and emergency medical services staff were seen at the building at approximately 8:30 a.m. on March 5. There was an RCMP presence at the building for the remainder of the day until the evening hours.

Const. Elenore Sturko stated in a news release that “no evidence of foul play has been gathered at this time. However the cause of death has not been determined."

Police said the identity of the woman will not be released at this time out of respect for the family. RCMP will continue to work with the assistance of the Office of the Chief Coroner.

Festival opens Friday

The second Arctic Images Festival, a celebration of visual arts and images of the North, opens March 13 at East Three school.

The show opens to the public at 6 p.m., after the students and staff at East Three school have a chance to view the collections.

Workshops include a session on wildlife photography led by Peter Mather, and a class on photographing the Aurora Borealis Saturday evening, also by Mather.

At the inaugural festival last year, the session on the Northern Lights was one of the most popular workshops. Awards will be handed out at 2 p.m. on March 15.

Youth can apply for Parliament session

The NWT Legislative Assembly is now accepting applications for the 2105 Youth Parliament.

All NWT grade 9 and 10 students are invited to apply to take part in the legislative assembly’s educational outreach program.

In a news release, the GNWT stated “the Youth Parliament gives youth across the territory the opportunity to discuss and debate issues that affect them and their peers. Students come to the legislature and assume the role of a Member of the Legislative Assembly.”

One student is to be chosen from every riding in the NWT.

The parliament will be held from May 4 to 8 in Yellowknife. The deadline to apply is April 1.

Coaching clinic

The Inuvik Ski Club is offering an introduction to community coaching workshop this weekend.

The clinic will run March. 13 and 14. Please contact the club if you are interested in joining and learning more about skiing.
