A man charged with two counts of forcible confinement after a standoff at the Northern Lites Motel shut down traffic for nine hours Dec. 18 has been released on conditions.

He was charged after RCMP received a call at 4:16 a.m. that morning about a "hostage situation" at the motel. RCMP closed down a one-block section of 50 Street and deployed a robotic all-terrain vehicle and a police negotiator was heard speaking with an occupant of the motel.

Heavily armed officers clad in tactical gear and a half-dozen marked and unmarked police vehicles monitored the motel. The standoff ended at 1:10 p.m. when officers kicked down a door, stormed the room the man was in and tackled him to the ground as he exited the room.

David Norman Brownlee, 37, appeared before a Justice of the Peace on Wednesday. A publication ban was placed on the hearing. His next court date is Feb. 24.

Former Mountie appears in court

Colin Roy Allooloo, a former RCMP officer, appeared in territorial court Tuesday on sexual assault and sexual interference charges dating back to 2010.

The clean-shaven man, dressed in a suit and tie and with a stern look on his face, made no comment during the proceedings. Defence lawyer Jay Bran spoke on his behalf.

Allooloo was found guilty in 2009 of assaulting a youth inside a Fort Simpson jail cell with pepper spray. He resigned from the RCMP in 2010 after 12 years of service.

Allooloo will proceed to a preliminary inquiry in territorial court May 14 to answer to the most recent recent charges.

Child porn case delayed

A lawyer representing Gary Stephen Miller, a man charged last year in a national RCMP child pornography investigation, told territorial court Tuesday that the case should be delayed while he awaits the result of a forensic report concerning the allegations against his client.

Miller was arrested and charged last May with charged with making, accessing, possessing and making available child pornography. Computers and other equipment were seized from his home as well as from his employer, Dominion Diamonds.

Defence lawyer Peter Harte, appearing on Miller's behalf, asked that the court date be rescheduled to Feb. 25 at 9:30 a.m. Territorial court judge Garth Malakoe agreed to his request.

The nationwide investigation involved more than 40 police agencies and nearly 170 separate investigations.
