Trial adjourned for former Ndilo chief

The trial for a former chief of Ndilo was adjourned Wednesday.

Ted Tsetta has pleaded not guilty to a charge under the Wildlife Act for illegal possession of caribou. He was charged last February after Environment and Natural Resources officers seized his meat and rifles. Tsetta told the court he had been unable to retain a lawyer in part because he has been dealing with a broken foot. Judge Bernadatte Schmaltz granted Tsetta's request for an adjournment, despite the fact three ENR officers were at court ready to testify. Tsetta will be back in court Feb. 3 to set a new date for a trial.

If it's broke, they'll fix it

Residents who find problems in the city have a new platform to air their grievances.

The city recently launched its Click & Fix Yk app. The app allows residents to take photos of things such as potholes, graffiti, broken parking meters and litter. The app then takes the information provided by you and sends a report along with the GPS coordinates of the problem area directly to the relevant city department. In return, users will receive e-mails with updates on the status of their issue.

Council adapts to webcasting

Mayor Mark Heyck started Monday's regular council meeting by sharing feedback he's gotten from viewers who watch council via webcast.

"One person said not to chew gum because you can hear it loud and clear," he said.

"Another person wrote from California to comment on the coats on the floor behind councillors."

Heyck then reminded councillors of the coat-rack.

"We don't have any other details other than that there is an investigation happening," Sharon Allen said on Dec. 8, adding the family will not be commenting further. Nahanni-Hope, from Fort Simpson, was living in Wrigley at the time of her death.

NWT Coroner Cathy Menard said Nahanni-Hope's remains would be flown to Edmonton for an autopsy.

In a press release, RCMP Const. Elenore Sturko wrote that there is "no evidence to suggest foul play at this time."

Sturko stated no other information is being released at this point.

Fort Liard drug bust

Three people from Fort Liard were arrested by the RCMP for possession of a "significant" amount of marijuana last week.

Officers stopped a vehicle as part of a check stop outside the community on Dec. 3.

According to a press release, the three people, who have not been identified, were then arrested for drug possession. Trafficking charges are pending.

All three were released from custody and will appear in court Feb. 5.

The 34-year-old man was awoken by the fire alarm in his house in Reindeer Point, outside of Tuktoyaktuk, in the early morning of Dec. 7. The man's injuries were deemed serious, but not life threatening.

Both the local RCMP and volunteer fire department responded to the call – police said the house was destroyed.

The fire was deemed not suspicious, but RCMP are reminding the public to check that all heaters, electronics and Christmas lights are in proper working order.

Also, ensure that Christmas decorations are kept away from heat sources and shut off at night.
