Drama students at Jean Wetrade Gameti School are planning to demonstrate the importance of Remembrance Day through performance art this afternoon, says teacher Shannon Longtin.

The school's Remembrance Day assembly is scheduled to take place in the school's gym this afternoon at 2:45 p.m.

Eleven drama students will begin the ceremony by performing These Nights, by the musical group Fun.

"We've made it into our own, but we're still using a lot of the lyrics," Longtin said.

Students will then perform a sound orchestra - a technique where actors use sound and movement to depict a scene, Longtin said. The students will be mimicking soldiers heading into battle.

They will also recite the poem In Flanders Fields together.

A moment of silence will be held at 11 a.m. and senior students will visit younger grades to deliver poppies to each student before the assembly begins, Longtin said.

"The senior level students are going to go around to the elementary school classrooms and hand those out and help kids put out poppies before the Remembrance Day ceremony," she said.

The events are being kept secret until the assembly begins, Longtin added.

"Nobody knows it's going on so it's a bit of an invisible theatre going on," she said.

Longtin said she decided to incorporate the drama students' new skills into the ceremony.

"I thought it would be natural to fit it to combine the theme to the technique while we're still learning dramatic techniques like movement and tableau," she said.

Tianna Takazo, Grade 12, said she's both excited and nervous to perform in front of the school.

"We're doing a little sound orchestra for a little show for the kids that are not going to be expecting it," she said. "It's kind of scary."

But she said she knows the performances will help students understand the importance of recognizing the significance of Remembrance Day.

"Remembrance Day is about the people that have gone to fight for our country and sacrificed their lives for us," she said.
