Unions to protest pension bill

Unions opposed to Bill 12, the Northern Employee Benefits Services Pension Plan Act, will hold a rally Friday outside the legislative assembly at noon to raise awareness of the proposed law. The bill is before the Standing Committee on Government Operations, which heard public input back on Sept. 25.

The rally comes as the legislature begins its fall session.

SPCA fund honours Amy O'Connor

A fund for people to donate to the NWT SPCA in honour of Amy O'Connor, a Yellowknife resident who died last month, has been created. A bench with her name on it will also be installed at the animal shelter, said her friend Jay Boast on Monday.

O'Connor, who died in Edmonton after developing an aggressive brain tumor, was known for her giving nature. Boast said she gave to a number of charities, including the SPCA.

Ebola fundraiser brings in over $5,000

A fundraiser dinner in support of Doctors Without Borders earlier this month raised $5,740, according to Nancy Trotter, the event organizer. Doctors Without Borders has sent medical staff to help fight the Ebola epidemic in West Africa since the beginning of the outbreak, earlier this year.

She said organizers for the fundraiser, which consisted of several community members with connections to Sierra Leone and Liberia, covered the cost of food meaning all the money raised is going to charity. Trotter said her team lost count of how many people showed to the event, but estimated the number was more than 120.

New VP for Status of Women Council

The Status of Women Council for the NWT has a new vice-president. The council announced yesterday that Georgina Jacobson Masuzumi was appointed to the council's board on Oct. 10.

In a news release, Premier Bob McLeod, who is also the minister responsible for women, said the appointment has guaranteed a strong voice for women's equality across the NWT, while Tina Gargan, the council's president, said Masuzumi's appointment was an honour.

Challenge for cadets

Rankin Inlet

A group of six cadets from the 3019 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps in Rankin Inlet attended a special cadet challenge with their commanding officer, Dorothy Tootoo this past month.

Making the trip were cadet Sgt. Tatonya Autut, Sgt. Obadiah Sanguin, Master Cpl. Precious Maningas, Cpl. Andrew Powell, Cpl. Jewel MacCallum and Cpl. Nadine Oolooyuk.

Playing it safe

Arviat

Due to the high number of polar bear sightings around Arviat recently, hamlet council has decided there will be no door-to-door treating for Halloween this year.

Instead, a community Halloween party will be held at the community hall for the kids.

People who usually provide treats to the kids are asked to bring their candy to the hall and join in on the fun and games.

Rankin Inlet

The Pulaarvik Kablu Friendship Centre is, once again, offering a helping hand to under-privileged kids in the community of Rankin Inlet.

The centre is currently gathering the names of youths who could use some help in keeping warm this centre.

Once the list is compiled, the participants in the sewing program will begin making winter parkas for the kids.

Baker Lake

The Baker Lake Youth Athletic Association (BLYAA) held its registration session this past Friday, Oct. 10, at Rachel Arngnammaktiq Elementary School.

The BLYAA had numerous items for sale at the session, including shoes, shirts, hoodies, jackets, pants and badminton gear.

All youth who participate in gym time are required to register with the BLYAA.

School closure

Chesterfield Inlet

Victor Sammurtok School in Chesterfield Inlet is closed today, Oct. 15, at least for its students.

Teachers are hosting professional development with a visiting team from Kivalliq School Operations in Baker Lake.

Final prenatal class

Baker Lake

Baker Lake's final prenatal class currently scheduled is set for Oct. 18, beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the old Hospice building.

All expectant moms (and the dads) are welcome to attend.

All who participate will also receive a chance to win an awesome baby hamper.
