Norman Wells resident Bryan Ross said he and a friend were cutting wood on Jackfish Lake Road outside the community on Sept. 27 when his friend noticed mail strewn throughout the woods.

"I was up with a friend of mine and he saw something that looked like garbage or a tarp off in the woods," he said.

"We went over to check it out and it happened to be three bags of unopened mail."

Ross said he and his friend collected the mail and called the RCMP.

"It was all spread out," he said.

"We had to gather it up. It was a really windy day so it was getting blown around."

Ross said none of the mail appeared to be opened.

In a press release, RCMP stated that other individuals had found an additional two bags of mail on Sept. 26.

RCMP Cst. Elenore Sturko said police couldn't comment on where the mail was coming from or which communities it was destined for as the investigation is ongoing.

The release also stated that Canada Post had advised them that medication had possibly been stolen.

However, Sturko said so far, that doesn't appear to be the case.

"What we can tell you is it appears that no medication was involved at this time," she said.

"However the investigation is ongoing and that could change as the investigation continues."

Sturko said if found, the individual or individuals who stole the mail could face theft from mail charges.
